Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I need some science ideas to fill about two months of time. I said 7th grade, but my youngest may follow along too. What we are doing now isn't working and I don't plan to start our bird unit until January. He loves doing experiments and learns best that way. I need something that takes little reading and I don't have to lecture. I don't want to spend any or not much money.

I do have some things on hand and ideas, but I'm not feeling to confident in those choices, yet.

Can you share what kind of things you have on hand, Cassie? Maybe we can brainstorm with you so that you can use what you have, and feel more confident in doing so.

Beyond that, is there a theme or study topic you'd like to brainstorm around? A book you have already maybe?

If you're fresh out of ideas and need a serious jump start, you might check out the MANY wonderful free resources at Home Science Tools.

I can't wait to read through this stuff!! Thanks for the link!

So, I went around the house to pull out science stuff. I have The New Way Things Works book and some of the K'Nex kits (thanks to your blog post about this). This has been sitting in the back of my head for a year to do. I'm thinking this is what I need to be doing because it's here and those kits were expensive and need to be used and my boys would enjoy it.

I looked over it this afternoon and pulled out the kits and I really don't see much if any planning needed (the main reason this hasn't been used). Read 1-2 pages and do a build and repeat. I could even get the DVDs from the library and use those instead of reading it to him.

Perhaps I just answered my own question. Or maybe you gave me the kick I needed to stop complaining and actually try to do something about this problem.

Great!

Sometimes it does just help to "think out loud" a bit!! And I am all about making use of what is already on the shelf when I can!

As far as your plans for Way Things Work, I assigned a couple of pages of reading each day, just like you observed. Then, on Wednesday and Friday, I made space for 30 - 45 minute blocks of building and exploration with the K'Nex sets. Now, I didn't have to "plan" too much more because this was for my science passionate kid and he is very self-propelled with all things science! But, if you did need to plan a little more, just look through the K'Nex building instructions and assign a particular "machine" to be built, then ask for a simple written narration with illustration and ask for the principle of Physics that the machine demonstrates to be listed. Simple. And done!
