The boys and I found a robin's nest yesterday right behind the playfort. We spent a little time watching (and photographing) the mother robin on the nest, being as quiet as we could be. We would like to go up there and peek every day so we can see when the babies are hatched, but we don't want to disturb the mother either.

Will this kind of activity disturb her (so much so that she might leave her nest) or should it be o.k. to keep checking on her? We're very eager to keep watch, but at the same time would not want to do anything to upset the situation! Thanks for any opinions!

I have heard of instances in which the mother Robin becomes so alarmed that she actually abandons the nest (babies and all), but I am sure you would manage to peek in a minimally obtrusive way.

Hopefully, you'll also take a few pictures for the rest of us!

Well, the robin kept her nest vigil up till two days ago and now she seems to have abandoned it. A friend of mine mentioned that robins make more than one nest so perhaps she ended up choosing a different site. I hate to think something happened to the eggs or her (although I did once chase off a squirrel that was getting too near the nest). This is so disappointing as we were so excited to hear those baby birds!

We had a robin build a nest right on the railing of our deck. I was amazed as this is a very busy part of our house and just to make things more interesting, the cat just had kittens right under where the robin decided to set up her house! It was great for the kids! They watched her the whole time as she built the nest. (So did the cat.) I learned alot too!! Then she laid 4 beautiful blue eggs in it. Well, a few days later I heard the cat make an aweful noise and looked out just to see a racoon (we live by the woods) steal the poor robins eggs. I think the cat was worried about her kittens. The kids were very disappointed, but now the robin (I THINK it is the same one) has built another nest right under my ds's bedroom window. Does a robin lay eggs more than once in the spring?
