Has anyone seen this resource ~ Small Wonders: Nature Education for Young Children? It's published by VINS (you can learn more about it using that link). We have Hands-On Nature also by VINS and it is one of our all-time favorite resources for nature and science study.
This new book, if it is at all like the first, sounds like a wonderful resource for the younger set. I'm thinking my 4yo (who is delayed and thrives in nature) would benefit, and I'm sure my older boys would too (can you tell I'm talking myself into ordering this book?  )
Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone has seen it, or in case anyone else is looking for nature study resources for the little ones.

I know Jenn, my friends always tell me I am a terrible influence when it comes to books! (their nickname for me is amazon.dawn  )
And speaking of Amazon, I went ahead and ordered the book ~ chalked it up to next year's science curriculum! My folks just came home from Shelburne, Vermont and were scouring bookstores up there looking for it for us!
I'll let you know what I think when it comes.

It came yesterday and looks fabulous! It is recommended for ages 3-5 but my 4 and 6yo will definitely benefit and I know my just about 11yo will enjoy helping with it all. It is roughly organized to be used from fall to spring (typical school year) and each chapter offers Extra Information for Adult Leaders, Indoor Activties, Outdoor Activities, Language Activity/Song, Crafts and Projects, Snacks, Book Ideas, and some chapters feature a Puppet Show. And since this is geared toward educators, there is a "Small Wonders" at home page for extending the lesson at home.
Here is how it is set up:

I'm really glad I bought it. Besides family use, I think I will be able to use it with our coop kids too.

Thanks for the review. The books sounds wonderful. Hmnn...everytime I visit this forum my list of "books to buy" (this one isn't in our library) gets longer!

One more question. Is the Hands on Nature set for the little kids, too? Or is that directed toward the older set? My dd is 4 and I'm wondering if, just now on Amazon , I should have bought the first one instead (or too )?

Cici, I've had Hands-On since my oldest was 5. I used some of the activities with a 4-5 group at coop. I would say the activities are geared for K-5 and up (I say "up" because you can definitely expand on the ideas for older kids). The way this book is set up, each chapter has a Background page (with lots of info. vocab, diagrams etc.), Activities, Extensions and a Puppet Show. You could definitely use them, adapted maybe in some cases, with your 4 yo. But I would say Small Wonders is geared toward preschool children and groups. I hope that all doesn't sound too fuzzy. I have both books now and would say I will use both; SW with my 4 & 6 yo and HON with my 6 & 10 yo.

I just put the Hands On Nature on my wishlist! The Small Wonders looks wonderful, but I have no little ones left!
