Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What are you doing? Recommendations?

I have used Kolbe's lesson plans for a few years and just don't want to do it again. She zipped right through Setons 7th grade worktext.

We liked Real Science 4 Kids biology and chemistry. But I just cannot afford to keep buying from them. It's over a $100 a year just for science. :(

I do not want Apologia or Abeka. I was contemplating Elemental Science classic (not sassafras). But after reading Theresa's concerns about sassafras, it makes me question the quality of their classics program too. So now I'm thinking more about McHenry's botany, cells and brain set up. That would be about a years worth for less than 1/2 a year course from RS4K.

I'd actually like something like RS4K with an extensive literature list. Alas such does not seem to exist yet?

Anyone have additional suggestions or experience with McHenry?

I don't have any suggestion, but a question. Did you like Seton's 7th grade?

Yes, we did. Her and two older brothers all enjoyed Seton's science. It's simple, direct, and engaging with LOTS of activities. One of their best worktexts, IMO.

I have no experience with McHenry's science materials (except for a few freebies), but I have bought and used some of her other materials (Mapping the World with Art, and Excavating English) and they are excellent.

Thank you, Martha.

I second that mapping the World with Art is excellent.

For my oldest next year, I'm doing Michele's recommendations on Mater Amabilis: Science through Time: Secrets of the Universe. We're doing the Year 1 books.

Cost? I bought all of the books used... I don't have all my receipts organized yet, so I don't know how much they totaled. I like how these books explain all the principles behind many theories, etc.

FYI - the 100 projects for beginning astronomers book has experiments as do the Fleisher books. I'm not doing any of the supplemental books except maybe the Fabre book.

This was going to be my recommendation. I have not used them, but I have them roughly scheduled for this grade (It is 3 years away, so all of those plans would be "rough" lol).

However, I think that they just released a corrected version of the first Sassafrass Adventure book this month, and while I don't know if the corrections coordinate with Theresa's qualms, it does seem they are not arrogant in their mistakes, if that makes sense.

They also have a corrections page for the Elemental Science series. I have the Sassafrass lesson plans (though, I haven't bought the actual novel yet), and the supplemental booklist is extensive. I couldn't say, though, whether the classic series offers the same. For the cost you are willing to spend, it might be worth reconsidering. Most of the science programs I've looked at for that level seem pretty spendy. I've always though NOEO looked like a nice compromise should I want something ready made, but once you include the kits needed for the higher level courses, it is definitely more than $100 for a year.

You might also be able to find some resources by clicking around Mary Daly's site. Perhaps it would be a good transition year for your daughter to read a few different living science books without having a particular program to follow for the entire year. Maybe using Daly's geology book for one semester and her chemistry book for another alongside something like The Mystery of the Periodic Table and maybe toss in some classics like Fabre.

Also, we use Life of Fred for math, and before pre-Algebra, there is a book "Elementary Physics" and one of the pre-Algebra books includes Biology. I've considered that I might want to plan for our science readings to relate at these points, but it is possible that these two books might stand alone enough to work as a science text if you found booklists you liked somewhere else to read alongside. A lot of libraries carry these books, so you could likely take a peak before buying.

How about Runkle's Geography? We will be using this for 7th grade for the 6th time this year. It has to be one of the kid's favorites. Some sections are less than stellar, but overall it is a good program...not overwhelming, but solid. Then monthly we also read a scientist bio.
Blessings,
Stephanie
