Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been swamped and am needing a good last minute lab to do with middle schoolers at our learning co-op .

Have any favourites??? (We aren't doing curriculum together- just interesting labs every two weeks).

Any particular subject? How much time does it need to fill? Do you have a materials budget?

Steve Spangler has some great stuff. I like this one:
Strawberry DNA extraction

Two thumbs up for Strawberry DNA Extraction. We did this for co-op bio lab a couple of weeks ago (I can't watch the Spangler video, but we used household items, like coffee filters and jars, not cheesecloth or test tubes, to separate the mushed strawberries and extraction solution solids and liquids). Freeze the rubbing alcohol overnight - I took ours to co-op in a cold tote with picnic freezer blocks in it - the temperature difference really helps separate out the DNA strands.

My students LOVED this lab.

Great ones! I think we will do the DNA (we did it years ago but the kids that did it then are all grown up now!).

You guys are a serious lifesaver!
Did I mention that this is for tomorrow???

If you can't get strawberries, I understand that spinach and/or dried split peas soaked in water overnight, then drained and pureed work really well.

Strawberries are on sale at Safeway right now. I am sure they are from way down South, but hopefully they will still work!

They'll work fine. Just be sure to mush them for two minutes the first time and a minute or so the second time. This breaks down all the cell walls so the DNA strands can escape.

Then, be sure to carefully pour the alcohol down the side of the jar (like pouring a beer so a head won't form).
