We are going to dedicate our June-August time to SCIENCE FUN!!! We are a little deficient in that area.
I was hoping to have some units and SNEAK in a little simple writing, research, reading, math. My kids are accustomed to "Summer Break" and will balk if they think this is "school!" I'm going to call it Summer Science. Loaded with fun for all, right? (will they buy it?) Its much easier if they are excited.
Any great science unit/ mini unit ideas out there?? Or even just little ideas--they don't have to be units. This will be for two boys ages almost 10 and almost 8. And I'll have all my little ones around me, too.
Picture Books? Experiments? Cross-curriculum ideas?
I would appreciate any ideas. I don't know where to begin.

Check out MacBeth's awesome Wild monthly site. She has tons of wonderful ideas there. I especially like the one which lists alot of activities to do at night-can't remember which one, but it is great.
I have a couple of little activities up at my website also, linked in the sidebar, and will be adding more(so far I have "Trapping the Night Stalkers", "Litter Critters", and "Nature Scavenger Hunt")They are very simple and my kids enjoyed them.
Btw, if you call it "Summer Science CAMP" and let them work from a tent or picnic table under a tarp, it'll sound even more fun!

Check out the Unity of Truth blog for some science ideas and of course Bill Nye, the Science Guy.

Sarah,
We are also doing "summer science." We concentrated on life science this year and like everything else we are behind. So botany is getting off to a late start but I figure summer's a good time to start. Here is my plan (I tried to schedule things in a timely fashion):
trees (May)
flowers (June ~ including edibles)
fruits (July ~ berry picking and canning)
herbs (August ~ coincides with Assumption and Blessing of Herbs)
vegetables (September ~ farmer's market)
bulbs and seeds (October)
indoor gardening and garden crafts (November)
I'm still piecing it all together ~ resources etc. I will use lots of picture books, maybe some chapter books too. The boys and I will keep notebooks ...
We have started trees this month. I posted about it here.

Dawn, that sounds like a great plan. Be sure to share more details when you get them together!

The website, e-naturalist, has been recommended on the forum several times, but wanted to put a plug in for it here. It fits perfectly with summer science camp. If you go to their section on units you will find a large selection of mini studies on various topics. They are short straight, forward and have helpful resource links. Some great ideas here!

Summer's a good time for a big bubble unit. I can't even remember what we did with ours. I used library books and of course we blew lots of bubbles. Throw in some water experiments like surface tension, evaporation, volume, centrifugal force, etc.
