Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Don't you love those "THIS is why I'm homeschooling!" moments?

I sent the boys out to run in the field across the street in between lessons. They came rushing back in exuberance. They'd found what appeared to be an injured crow. They were so concerned and excited.

We looked up the proper protocol for handling crows... and then my nine year old called the local wildlife rehabilitation center to ask their advice. (I was so proud of his maturity and good manners on the phone... reminded me of the concept that usually home schooled kids are comfortable with adults and children alike.)They told us what to do and we carefully wrapped the bird in a blanket and took him in a box to the center.

Shame on us, it was a baby! (Baby birds are almost ALWAYS better left alone.) It was a big baby which is why it fooled us... but this explains why there were crawing crows in the tree around him when we approached him. Baby crows can be quite large before they fly apparently.

Anyway, the director at the center said that he was really skinny so they were going to keep him for a couple days to feed him and then call us to pick the bird up and return him where we found him. He said that the other crows would recognize the bird and pick up helping him forage on the ground until he learned to fly.

It was just so cool for my kids to experience all this. So awesome to be able to drop everything and tend to this little creature and learn the little lessons he had to teach us. These are the kinds of things that renew my hope and resolve!
