Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My son is 6 (1st grade) and we're just starting out with homeschooling in general, and CM homeschooling in particular. We love the nature study aspect already! He's a natural at it, which is so cool to see.

My question is, what do you bring with you on nature walks and how do you approach nature journaling? I got him a sketchbook and so far we have brought a pencil and colored pencils (although he hasn't wanted to do anything in color). Later, we've looked things up online to get a little more info about what we found.

Is there anything else you like to have with you when you go out to explore? Any tips for a newbie?

Thanks!!
Claire

Cookies!

And...I hesitate to share this because I really do believe that the simpler, the better, but...I have a tough little field microscope that we like to take with us. We don't always take it, but I am amazed by how often we really do use it.

Here's an older thread that talks a bit about nature journaling (I talk just a bit about what I do with my girls ... that was last year, some has changed, but it's basically the same for this year). I know that there are several books that may help you in this effort; I'll come back and revisit this thread, right now I've got to get myself ready for Mass

Hi Claire (and welcome), since the thread Chris mentioned I've added a few things. Items to collect things to bring back home: some ziploc baggies or little baby food containers. I noticed that the kids enjoyed picking things up and bringing them home for our nature table. Depending on where we are, sometimes we just couldn't sit and do our drawings so bringing them home helped. They could do their entries at home or really research what they had found.

I also discovered over the summer Wild Days by Karen Rackliffe. Great CM how to for this!

BTW, cookies is on her list and I agree sometimes simpler is better!
