Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm really excited about this. One of our hs groups is doing a small chemistry co-op using the Thames & Cosmos Chemistry Kit. They will meet once a month starting in September to Apil next year. They will work on an experiment per meeting basically a lab for the kids.

The mom running the group has been coming to my CM seminar days and has decided to add an element of living books to the co-op. She suggested for anyone interested in really delving into the topic to use Michael Faraday's The Chemical History of the Candleor if there is an older child in the group whom wants to be challenged she suggested: Elements of Chemistry by Antoine Lavoisier. I just looked/glanced at the Lavoisier book on amazon and its over 500 pages long. I'm excited because it does say he was of the Catholic faith but I'm thinking it might be too challenging for my advanced 6th grader.

Question: Has anyone used the Lavoisier book? Is it more suitable for say high school age rather than middle school? And should we devote an entire year to it rather than half a year?

(I'm sticking to three Secrets of the Universe books for the firt half of our school year. The third book we are using introduces chemistry so I was thinking of finishing the year and maybe going into summer with Fabre's book The Wonderbook of Chemistry.)

If you have a comment on the other two books I mentioned I'd love to know too.
