The final clues/updates for mystery locations are up and they get very specific. It helped us - we have all the cities (we think). I know this falls during Holy Week so it is not the best time, but if you are reading and could post your guess with as much info as you have that they are asking for on the final form. I'll post it in this message. (How do I make this a sticky?) We will only have a week to get everything together.
Here is what I could find so far from other posts to the various forum threads. I only posted what had been previously posted. Let me know if I have transposed anything incorrectly, left anything out, or if you have changes/corrections from what you originally posted. Post only your own info for now. At some point if people aren't posting their own we should have others who have tracked the locations post their info. What do you think? When should we do that?

We have to double check our guess. Hopefully we can work on it first thing in the morning before we shut the computer down for Good Fri. Thanks so much for posting the guesses all in one place.

We're going to stick with Puako Hawaii. Latitude guess is 19 deg. 32min. We can't find anything close with the same longitude. The sunrise sunset times for Mon. matched up. Everyone have a blessed Good Friday! Congrats to Lissa!

I concur - I've added the latitude. Thanks, Theresa.
I found a neat fact about Curitiba - It's original name when it was founded by Portuguese explorers in 1693 was "Vila da Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhais" Our Lady of the Light in the Pine Forest. Beautiful. It's one of two cities in this year's Journey North named after Our Lady.

Well, I'm not perfectly happy with our guess (I feel dense ), but I believe that it is:
#4:
City: Asunción
Country:Paraguay
Latitude: 25s16
Longitude: 57w40
My main problem is this statement:
"Our province or 'department' is one of the country's smallest (in area), but one on the most densely populated."
I believe that the Department that Asunción is in (Asunción is also the name of the daparment) is THE most densely populated and THE smallest in Paraguay. I really thought that the city was going to be in the Central Department. Also because of the "spider web lace" clue.
The Lat/Long combo were the only ones that EXACTLY matched the data given by the mystery class. (Villeta almost matches but doesn't on several dates plus I doubt it fits the last clue.)
Anyone???
(edited to fix alternate city name)

Jen,
I think you are right on target - at least that's what we guessed also! That's why I included the mention above of Our Lady as it's full name is "Nuestra Señora de la Asunción" -Our Lady of the Assumption. That whole thing with the departments/provinces is a bit confusing. I found numerous places that list Asuncion, Central, Paraguay. Although some listings refer to it (Asuncion) as a Department most others say there are 17 Departments and one Capital city/district, Asuncion. So in my mind Asuncion is in Central Department for the sake of the clues.
The last clue about the monument to heroes pretty much tags it in Asuncion since that is where the Plaza de los Heros is located.

Whew! Thanks, Mary. I found pictures of the Plaza de los Heros too, but still felt uncertain because of the Department thing.
Update on the lat/long (converted to decimal)
#4:
City: Asunción
Country:Paraguay
Latitude: 25.3 S
Longitude: 57.7 W

One more thing, I updated to decimal above after reading this on the Journey North website:
Q: In our answer, how detailed or accurate do you expect the longitude and latitude to be? Whole degrees? Tenths? hundreths? Does it matter if they use decimals versus degrees minutes and seconds?
A: Please follow the instructions for submitting your answers carefully. Use the Checklist we provide in late April. The most important part of the answer is the city/town and the country. We ask for the lat/long so we have another way to confirm the answers (We recognize sources might give slightly different lat/long coordinates.)
We'd prefer the lat/long to be given in decimals, and going to tenths of a degree is fine.

Thanks, Jen. We can change those before we send them in to make sure they are all consistent.

I was looking back at past Mystery Class results and almost every year they have had one at the South Pole or McMurdo, Antarctica. Doesn't seem that there has to be a classroom of children at the location.

Well our final clue confirms we were off by a few miles. Kapaau, Hawaii has to be the town, as it is the location where the lost statue of the king was erected. Did anyone else besides Mary beat us to it ?
Here it is: Latitude 20.23 deg., Longitude 155.8 deg.
By the way the checklist says we must declare a grade level. Did we ever discuss this? What grade level should we pick? If we go with an average, my dc are grades 4, 8 and 10.

My participant is 5th grade. Can't we just declare multi-age?

We can declare multi-age, but we must list all grades in the class:
From the Checklist:
"In the Subject line you MUST also tell us your GRADE LEVEL (if you're a multi-grade class, list all grades in the class)."
My son is in 4th grade.
Happy Easter!

I've sent messages to those Mystery class participants who haven't yet posted their guesses - all except Lissa. Didn't want to bother her on her babymoon. Her quess is mostly complete just need the latitude and the coutry (which just was never posted by name so I didn't include it). Should we go ahead and just fill those in?

I'm trying to post all the grade levels here together also so we'll be able to have the info needed to include that. So far:
grades 2, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 10
If your participants fall into these grade levels only you don't need to post the grade levels - if you have participating students in other grades post those and I'll add it.
