Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We have our science year pretty much set for my oldest dd. I've created notebooking pages for the two of the five books in the Secrets of the Universe series. But I'm still trying to get a couple of other living book reads that coincide with the topics we'll be covering. I have Archimedes and the Door of Science on our list. While I was searching something similar for Copernicus and came across Tiboldo and the Hole in the Calendar by Abner Shimony.

Has anyone read this before? I'm prereading it now, but I was just wondering if there is anything I should be looking for in terms of Pope Gregory XIII. He is central to the story plot. So far I haven't had any red flags and the author clearly tells us that there are fictional characters in fictional situations but their lives revolve on very real scientific situations of the time. So far it's a light read with some really good mention of science and theories.

I'd love any other suggestions as well. (she's finishing Galen and the Gateway to Medicine and enjoying ).

I read it and found it to be a great book. Though not a Catholic story, it has nothing really anti-Catholic. I read it about 2 years ago. I remember he does describe some embryos in a jar in passing, in a science lab I believe, which struck me as a weird and unnecessary detail, but does not say anything more.

I saw recently in the news that Somoa will lose a day when it switches sides of the International Date Line, and that reminded me of Tibaldo.

Webexibits Calendars Through the Agesis a neat site for a full history (and being secular downplays the role of the Catholic Church as much as possible ) but still has a lot of great information.

So glad to hear, thanks Kris. I'm really liking all the science it mentions. I think she'll enjoy it too. I read through the midwife delivery chapter and while not graphic it is accurate & tastefully done.   Just in case some one else considers the book.

That website looks like a great resource on calendars .

I can already see the rabbit trails this book might create.

I have seen some coverage of calendars in picture books on keeping time. I need to check those again and see how substantial that is. Just requested a couple to see.

Off to search in our picture book archives, we may have talked about them, we've talked about so much over the years
