Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ds14 asked me about Galileo this week, I mumbled something about the full story isn't represented in most books and Church gets a bad rap. Then I stumbled to a halt and realised I really know nothing.

So what is the full Galileo story and how do I explain it to a 14yr old?

Catholic Answers has a fairly short explaination of the Galileo controversy

I got the book Copernicus, Galileo and the Catholic Sponsorship of Science. last year. I haven't delved to much into it yet, but it looks good. I really liked this authors book on Evolution, which is what lead me to get this one as well.

Maybe someone else has a more in depth review?

If you can get The Teaching Company's Science and Religion by Professor Lawrence Principe, he has a wonderful detailing of the "affair." I was able to get it through our library.

Oh, also Patrick Madrid has a article at the Catholic Education Resource Center.

FYI, there's a new book out by Catholic author James Hannam called The Genesis of Science: How the Christian Middle Ages Launched the Scientific Revloution (Kindle edition is only $9.99)
