Update/clues week of April 11
Hi everyone – very exciting week here. We are on the final interdisciplinary clue which helps to locate the actual city or town. Several of you have made guesses. Today’s clues help to confirm or redirect those. I’m excited to see what everyone comes up with. So if you haven’t posted yet with a guess, take some time to check the clues and do so. Please post to the group. Those who have already posted a guess you can update whether or not today's clues confirm your guess. When we submit our guesses to the JN site, we need to have some specific info (city, country, latitude, longitude) so I’ll be asking for that soon – or you can post it all with your guess now). The guesses are due April 29 so we'll have to do that right after we open back up after the Holy Week clsure.

Mystery class #5: 11 hours 35 minutes
So....after discovering that we are in: --> Africa --> South Africa --> North West Province ...
our clue this week:
Quote:
"Originally just a place in the rocks, today our city is our provincial capital, and is almost in another country." |
|
|
The capital of the North West Province is Mafikeng. Mafikeng lies near (practically on) the Botswanan border and is best known for "the famous siege during the Anglo-Boer War, which ended in a decisive victory for the British and made a hero of Robert Baden-Powell." (source) Robert Baden-Powell is, as some of you may know, considered the founder of the Boy Scouts, and a man of incredible moral character!
So...............Mystery Site #5:
Africa --> South Africa --> North West Province --> Mafikeng
WHEW!!!!!!

Our picture clue was of the National Palace in Guatemala City, so, oh, how I love to say this!! were RIGHT . So satisfying!
Our photoperiod for April 11 was 12 hrs, 24 min. The longitude is 14 degrees, 37' N and 90 degrees, 31' W.
This was really fun! We will definitely do it again. Thanks for coordinating this, Mary.

We think our city is Jerusalem!
Clue from last week:
"Of the six administrative districts in our country, we are located in one that touches two other districts."
And this week's:
"Our city is very old, very famous, and very important to several religions; tourism is one of our major employers. This is our current city hall; like most other buildings here, it is built of a material named for the city."
Quote:
Jerusalem stone, a white or cream-colored marble found in the hills surrounding the city became a required building material under the British Mandate. |

Yes, isn't that cool! When we saw that we were very excited - what a holy city to have as one of the mystery locations.

Hi Ladies!
I led Journey North Mystery Class for our co-op group and I posted a blog entry with our answers. This year again was fun and challenging! I hope your families enjoyed it as much as we do.
Mary, great job moderation this project on the forum!

The Big Reveal was posted today - very exciting. I can't find our group listed. We should have been in one of the high school categories (I wasn't sure of the ages of all the students so just listed K-12 when I submitted to make sure. I know we had a couple high schoool aged students). Anyway we had 9 out of the 10 locations so figure we should be there not sure, why we weren't. Our local group is listed as we got 10 out of 10 in 9th grade level. Kris, I see your group listed also. Gwen (momwise) group here locally is listed also.
Way fun - really interesting locations to learn about. Our group is having a culturual picnic in few weeks, with each participant bringing a food item from that country and sharing some information (and Catholic connections) to their country. I'm getting some postage stamps from the different countries to share with the group. Wish we could have a 4 Real gathering, too.

Today they posted the Mystery Class Introductions. You can "meet" your class and find out about them and their city/country.
Suzanne, you and the girls got a homeschooled girl in Jerusalem - very cool!

I'm shocked we made it with two incorrect answers (I caught two others before submitting.) As you see our oldest was 10th grade so that's where we came up.
I have to say that the South Korea city was tough. I blew the first rule, which was to cross reference the population. Interestingly, two similar-looking robots were built by KIST in Dengue and KAIST in Daejeon. That's just one of the many reasons this is such a great project that we keep returning to year after year.

Yes, that location was a challenge. When you posted earlier your guesses and I saw we had a different guess, I was worried. That is so weird that so many of the clues matched up with both cities. We really stayed with longitude and hours of daylight (latitude). Dengue was too far east and south when I tried to match.
We are having our cultural picnic tomorrow. Should be fun.
