Ooh, thanks, Theresa! Much appreciated!
P.S. Y'all know I'm going to disappear on you for a few days at some point, right? My due date is ten days away but I usually go a little late. I'm sure Alice will have news as soon as there is news to have. Just wanted to give you a heads-up for when I drop out of the mystery class for a while!

We are stumped as to the whereabouts. Am I the only one who is having trouble figuring it out?

Tracy, how much info do you have? Were you able to get the longitude numbers using the worksheet from the Journey North site? If so, why don't you post class #10's clues and we can brainstorm.

I think last week's clue nailed location 10 for us. I could be wrong, but...try Googling Beluga Caviar (the prized eggs) and see what body of water they are in. That should help with the rest of the clue (the landlocked, etc part).
If you still have not gotten it, this weeks clue leads you to google Nobel and oil exploration, which comes up with (warning! don't click here unless you want the answer!)this website
Then just use your longitude to narrow the city
Hope that helps.

Tracy,
I see that you posted the longitude on the posting longitudes thread so I'll assuming it must still be trying to figure the latitude. I remember you posting earlier that you were finding that challenging. This site really helped us narrow down the latitudes.
For example:
In the green boxes titled Select for dates, click on "Input a date value."
Also in the green boxes the section titled Select for locations, click on "Input latitude & longitude." Then select a date for your mystery location(from the ones we were given) - we chose Feb. 20.
In the first row of purple boxes plug in the year and the month and day that you decide to use.
We know your latitude is in the Northern Hemisphere due to increasing photoperiod, so click on N in that row. Then pick a random latitude - for instance 30 (or whatever one you think might be pretty close if you have a guess). Put 30 in the first box for degrees latitude and a 0 for the second box (minutes). You can leave all the rest of the boxes below empty as they are irrelevant to what you want to find. (also ignore the location row - it won't be part of the calculation)
Now when you hit the calculate button it will give you some information in the white box below that applies to all locations with that latitude. The first one is daylength (photoperiod).
Is that length more or less than the length you have for that day for your mystery location? If it is longer than your mystery location's day length, you know your latitude guess is too far south. If it is smaller the guess is too far north. Move your latitude guess higher or lower depending on the result. When you get close (within a minute or two) then adjust the second latitude box (minutes latitude) from zero to 15, 30, or 45. When you get a photoperiod that mattches you have your approximate latitude. Then combined with the longitude which you already know it should be easier to narrow your location down. Plugging both latitude and longitude into this place on Mapquest pinpoints a general area. Hope this helps.
Theresa's suggestion from the clues was good - last week when I had googled "prized eggs" the top hits were Beluga cavier and it talks about the region where they come from which fit the latitude we had.

Mary G. - do you think it could be smack dab at the South Pole? One of the earlier hints said they have to borrow a time zone and have not been able to find a longitude for their location either. That has to be the pole.
Our guess for our location - mystery class #7 is Masqat, Oman (or there abouts).

Ok. Thanks for all the help! We actually seem to be on the right track afterall. That is the area we were looking at. And my dh had helped with the cavier clue and I figured out the Nobel. Thanks Gwen also for responding.
Mary M- I still haven't had a chance to do the latitude but we'll try that tomorrow.
Theresa-I didn't click on the website that would give it away yet but thanks so much for the advice.
Thanks again-I feel better knowing we are not way off base or anything!

Is "anyone" at the South Pole? I know there are little research sites all over but I just wans't sure how specific it needed to be.

Thanks so much for explaining how to use the Longitude calculator.
When we used the Mapquest location finder, we got Eastern Hem. when we wanted Western. I couldn't figure out any way to specify which one we wanted.
