I picked up a copy of Fieldbook of Natural History, by E. Laurence Palmer, second edition revised by H. Seymour Fowler in 1975.

It seems like an excellent reference book for nature study, with more detail information than Handbook of Nature Study. The illustrations are pen and ink drawings, but each entry has an illustration.

What I was wondering is how incorrect are the classifications? I can use this for ID of nature, but it won't be correct for the classes? I'm just not sure when the classification was revised. Maybe if I had that date in my head I could keep things straight.

I don't know my Handbook of Nature Study well enough, but I don't think she goes into classification at all, other than the basics that still remain intact. She is strictly Nature Study without much hard science in it. In
that sense it looks like the Fowler book you mention has more science, particularly classification. It was first published in 1949 and updated in 1975. I'm curious to see it!

Classification was classically always based on physical structure; now genetic similarities have turned things upside down. I don't think you could keep current except through the Internet where data is regularly updated.

To me that begs the question as to what is a sensible body of classification knowledge to teach high schoolers given its current state of flux?

Well, I feel like an evil temptress. It's not a narrative style book, but entries for anything thinkable in natural history, starting with the heavens to the animal kingdom. I hope I'm won't disappoint you all.

I kept finding references of people using it as their go-to book for ID information. And for that, it's just perfect.
