I am really hoping someone has some ideas for science for a 6-7 year old, with some activities that a 3/4 year old could join with.
This year we did a study on birds, that will probably carry on until we break for advent, but then I am hoping for something already packaged for us, as I will be writing a lot of content already for next year for other topics.
DS is interested in studying either trees or preferably gems, fossils and rocks. I've seen Apologia but it was only okay in my opinion. Even just a few books we could spring board off and work through would be good - I am just doubting my ability to do a geography/history/church history course that the children are wanting plus some kindy stuff for dd and our ongoing saint studies, as well as doing the phonics/english language stuff. It is all too much research and writing and prep for me to handle.

For earth science ideas for younger kiddos I really like the book "Science Smart: Cool projects for exploring the marvels of the planet earth." In fact I will be using it for earth science with my dd next year so she can do earth science right along with her big brother.

What I like is that it isn't just a project book, but also a very informative and interesting text with great color photos (and step-by-step instructions for the projects). So, it really can be an all-in-one resource.
The Amazon review lists it for grades 4-7, but that would be for using it independently. If you used it as a read-aloud and teachers guide I think it would be fine for a 6yo.
Some projects will be a bit above a 6yo, but most I think could be used as is or adapted easily.

I am using Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding as a spine for First Grade (and probably beyond).

We used Behold and See 3 for first grade science - I read it to dd and we did the experiments together.

We liked the sound of the Building the foundations of scientific understanding, and also had a look at CHC and I liked the Easy as 1,2,3 and the Science 2 for little folk book of stories. Has anyone got any input on those titles? It is so hard for me to pick something without seeing it!

Our science before grade three consists of reading fun books, talking about out how the material fits with what we see every day and the occasional hands-on activity and I've personally found Homescience Tools to be a good source of books and kits (link goes to their rock and mineral page). My younger children have particularly enjoyed their Geology Field Trip in a Bag.
We do own CHC's Easy as 1,2,3 and Science 2.
CHC's Easy as 1,2,3 gives a chapter on choosing books, a scope and sequence, some activities and suggestions on ways to connect the studies to Our Faith. It's not a set of lesson plans.
[ I mainly use it as a source of topics and a central place to note down relevant books and activities.]
My children quite enjoy the stories in Science 2 but I consider the book to be enrichment rather then a core text as the stories do not provide a overall framework.

Well I was about to click to purchase when I checked my library. That had two of the books that made up the trio of the new book. So I reserved first, if we love them (sure we will  ) I'll buy Science Smart.
