Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hey MacBeth,
We were on a wonderful nature hike yesterday, and we came upon a soggy wasp's nest. It was on the ground and there weren't any live wasps inside (or dead for that matter). There might be some eggs inside? How do we kill off anything that might still be alive in there so we can keep the nest in our nature box? My guess would be that the elements have already taken care of this for us... but just to be safe

Thanks,
Alison

It's probably fine, but I am not absolutely sure about the timing of the wasp life cycle. . You could put it into a large airtight bag for a while, once it's dried out. Since the care of young wasps is labor intensive, there are probably no eggs left in the nest. How big is it?

That was my thought, but I will put it in a bag once it is dry.

It's a nice nest; it's about 3in by 1 3/4in. We also found some indian paint rocks

thanks,
Al

I want to encourage caution in this. Wasp eggs survive nasty winter conditions every year without the aide of any live wasps during the coldest season.

A friend of mine used to keep a large pile of wood inside near her woodstove so that they wouldn't have to go outside and get more every day. She noticed that one log had some eggs in it, but she didn't think anything of it. She placed it in the pile near the warm stove and kept stacking. Within a few days there were hornets flying around her living room in the middle of the winter!

We found a large wasp nest two years ago and put it into an aquarium (I always have an aquarium available as a temporary holding cell for our finds, you can easily find them for cheap at garage sales). The lid has mesh screening on it so that air circulates but only the teensiest bugs can escape it. Our nest didn't have any wasps hatch out of it.

When I was a kid we used to use nail polish remover on a cotton ball placed in an airtight jar with an insect specimen when we wanted to collect insects. I don't know if this would work for eggs and larva, but it might be worth looking in to.
