Ds found an egg half-buried near a tree in our yard. It's a soft pale green, size of a small chicken egg. We didn't hide hard boiled eggs in our yard, and unless a neighbor kid did and we didn't know, we are puzzled. Would a wild bird lay such a large eggs, similar to a chicken egg?
I'll try to do pictures soon.

any ducks or geese flying through? We get huge flocks this time of year of snow geese headed north.

Since it was half-buried, there is a chance it is a chicken egg and a raccoon, crow, or other animal carried it there.

Oh, yuck, awful to think of a raccoon in these parts. I'm not in a rural area, so it seems like a long way to carry a chicken egg when no neighbors are raising any.
But my husband recently replaced a fence post and there's a newly dug hole near the place, which has concerned us and our neighbor. Not sure what kind of animal did that....but perhaps it's connected to the egg.

Is it a raw egg or boiled?
It could have been from someone's trash and possibly a dog, even, that carried it there.

Spin test to determine? Is that universally applicable -- doesn't spin if raw, spins if cooked?
Guess it's a hardboiled. Nothing is cracked, so I'm only spinning.
So, thanks. My suspicions were chicken all along....to have authority backing me up means I can throw it away and not try to hatch it. 
It's not typical texture of store bought egg, nor color, but I can see how with Easter being recent that SOMETHING like this might have happened.

Don't rely on my authority!LOL! Honestly, I am clueless and I cannot see the color or texture well on my screen. But if the spin test says it's hard boiled (will spin quickly if boiled, slowly if raw) then I'd say even if it isn't a chicken egg, then it ain't gonna hatch!LOL!
ps
Have you ever seen the eggs of an Araucana or Americana chicken? They can be pale blue or green in color.
ETA: Dang it. Now I've got "Green eggs and ham" stuck in my head. Thanks a lot, Jenn!LOL!

But the egg is green, and it looks like this picture. I'm going to spin compare with our other hb eggs later with ds.

Just did it. Our real hb spins really fast. The green egg spins pretty fast, not always, but definitely not like the raw. The raw is wobbly.
So, I'm leaning towards saying it's soft boiled.

i'm betting it's an aracauna chicken egg. we get some every couple of weeks from a local farmer. our two dozen is usually a mix of brown, pale green and pale blue. they are beautiful!

We did, but I couldn't post on Saturday. We put it in a ziploc bag in case of bad odors. Turns out to not be cooked, very runny, yellow yolk. Funny how the spin test didn't work
I would guess the araucana chicken egg, too. It was lovely.

The egg spin test is more than just the speed. I can sometimes get a raw egg to spin pretty fast but especially as it slows you definitely see the wobble factor. The other thing you can try is spinning it on its end (wide end). A raw egg really will not spin on its end at all, while with a hard boiled one you can get it to.
Another test: give the raw egg a good spin on it's side. As it spins, stop the egg by quickly putting your finger on the top of the egg, but enough to stop the motion. Then just as quickly, remove your finger. When you remove your finger, the raw egg will continue to move, trying to spin.
With a hard boiled egg when you stop it like that quicly then let go, it will stay stopped - it won't keep moving and trying to spin.
Since it's already cracked open can't test anymore, I know. I'm just clarifying for the future...

Thanks, Mary. I'll have to remember these.
We really did experiment with the spinning. We had a raw egg, hard boiled egg, and the test egg and spun for comparison. I did know that raw can spin, as we could do it, but the spinning was different, and then would get wonky after a while.
It was just the "test egg" didn't match up either one, but imitated both camps. So confusion.
But this was fun, and we sure would like to find another egg to do this again!
