Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Tree in the Ancient Forestby Carol Reed Jones and Christopher Canyon. This is a cumulative story poem, like the House that Jack Built, but it is about a giant tree and all who inhabit it. Beautiful illustrations. Informative glossary of critter names at the end.

A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold.
It is a wonderful example of nature jounaling and natural history, and one of my all-time favorite books.

We have Once There Was a Tree which is illustrated by Gennady Spirin, a new favorite of ours. We also really like What's Under the Log? ~ it's perfect for little hands, and fun to bring along on a walk in the woods. We also refer to A Field Guide to Eastern Forests.

And though I don't have it, The Gift of a Tree looks beautiful (and my library has a copy so I'm going to pick it up this weekend!)

We also have a nice collection of animal finger puppets (like these) and during creative spurts, I tell little "stories from the woods" using the various puppets. I haven't done this in a while and I really should get back to it!

I'm sorry to go on ~ I love this topic ~ but I just remembered another favorite forest book:

How the Forest Grew

It is such a sweet little book with lovely pencil sketches. It is all about the stages and variety of life in a Massachusetts forest, but as it says on the opening page, "It could be about a forest anywhere because most forests grow the same way."

C is for Conifer from this album inspired our study of trees. The one son rocks madly to it when it comes on in the car.

We enjoyed While A Tree Was Growing. It shares an added bonus of a timeline in the story.
