Gee, I feel like such a slug here -- my class is STILL 24 hrs...
If I understand this right, in a few weeks don't we start getting geographic clues to be able to pinpoint pretty near the exact location? Obviously ours is down near the Pole, but does it need to be more specific?
My kids are having a blast wtih this -- thanks again Lissa!

We should make Mary G.'s family calculate all our hometown photoperiods to make up for not having any ciphering to do for their Mystery Class! Hee hee...
Mary—yes, I believe in a week or two they're supposed to post longitude clues for each class, and after that some cultural hints. Kate has been studying the globe, wild with speculation...this really is a fun project!

P.S. One thing that is fascinating us about your 24-hours-of-daylight location, Mary, is that wherever it is, there has to be a SCHOOL of some sort there—right? The "Mystery Classes" are actual classes of schoolchildren? At least that's how I understand it...Maybe there are some homeschoolers at a research station in Antarctica! Or are points of South America far enough south to be getting 24 hour days right now? I know Alaska and Sweden, etc, have their own periods of "midnight sun," but I didn't realize it lasted so long...somehow I thought that was just a day or two at the height of summer.
I'm learning a lot here!

I found this site for Sunrise/Sunset times around the world. Here is the data for Punta Arena Chile
I was surprised that the longest day wasn't longer. Just go up to the top and click on a continent and you can check around.
What fun!

I found this page on the Journey North site today.
It has specific things for this week (see more details, pictures, and links at the actual web page).
If You Could Un-tilt the Earth
Last week you discovered that the Earth's axis isn't oriented straight up and down, but instead is tilted 23.5 degrees in relation to the sun.
Challenge Question #1:
"What do you think your climate and seasons would be like if the Earth were not tilted on its axis? Why do you think so?"
You can respond to the question (as a class I think) and also read others' responses.

Also Important Preparation for Upcoming Longitude Clues: Understanding GMT
The weekly sunrise/sunset time data that you have been graphing will help you estimate the ten secret sites' relative LATITUDE. But you'll also need to know the sites' approximate LONGITUDE in order to narrow your search. When it comes to estimating a site's LONGITUDE, however, the sunrise/sunset time data doesn't give you all the tools you need.
In just a few weeks, on March 10, we'll provide a different kind of time data called GMT or UT time (for Greenwich Mean Time or Universal Time) to help you estimate the secret sites' Longitude. To prepare, let's start this week by looking at important background information about GMT. Next week we'll look at Latitude and Longitude in more detail.

Finally a Mystery Class Glossary
Don't miss this chance to build your vocabulary with terms used in our reports. Find the following terms from this week's report and define them in your journals or portfolios before going to the Glossary: GMT, Prime Meridian, Longitude, Earth's Axis and Earth's Rotation.

Thanks Jennifer for mentioning these further links -- we do this on Monday mornings, so I'll have my curriculum all mapped out (as it were)

I found these references that might indicate a "school" of some type. Students on Ice has an expedition classroom, but this years expedition ended Jan. 10 - could it still count I wonder. There was also this quote on a global classroom site:
"There aren't any real schools here in Antarctica (except that I heard people from Argentina have a place here on the ice that has families and schools). However, different people teach classes on art, martial arts, ceramics, and stuff like that."

No, it doesn't seem possible, does it, based on the information from the current daylight website Jen posted and the Punta Arena info from Gwen.

Some parts of northern Alaska and Sweden are north of the Arctic Circle so are in the geographic area that would experience true 24 hour daylight for several months. Points just south of the Arctic Circle are going to start experiencing sunrise/sunset again earlier even though it will only be only for minutes at a time initially. Because of the sun's proximity to the horizon even though it sets it won't be "dark" there but will be twilight. If we look at the Southern Hemisphere the only thing south of the Antarctic Circle is Antartica so is the only region that could possibly experience the true 24 hour daylight there - especially this late. So there has to be some sort of school/classroom there that is going to count - though not a "traditional" school in any sense.
My Dad could have been transferred to Alaska when I was young and he always told my mom that we would only be going for "2 days and 2 nights!"

So I just did another search and found this "Several bases are now home to families with children attending schools at the station" at Wikpedia. This map shows which stations are south of the Antarctic Circle.
