Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know MacBeth reccomends Peterson guide books but they are a little too advanced for us. The specimen moves too fast for us unless of course it is a plant. And it doesn't hold my children's attention. The eldest is only three. I hate having to say... oh I don't know the name of that brown bird. Let alone the blue one or the red one that visits us.... Any suggestions for a city girl trying to be a naturalist?

I like the Pocket Naturalist series by Waterford Press. I have one for Arizona Birds. They aren't books really, but rather more like a legal size paper (longer and narrower) folded into itself forming 12 "pages." I like that it is laminated, kids can handle it easily, and mom can see all the common birds in one place. They are even divided into catagories such as waterbirds & nearshore birds, hummingbirds, etc., all in full color. The pictures are small, a bit bigger than a thumbprint, and nicely detailed. The price is right, too .

Hang in there, city girl! The birds, CCM/4Real, and MacBeth's encouragment, are what turned THIS city girl into a budding naturalist .

Love,

If you are looking at birds, why not a laminated bird poster of the birds in your region? It contains 20 or so birds. We used this first - kept it velcroed on the wall next to the bird feeder. This year, my 7 yr old is so into the birds, he is taking pictures with my old digital camera and reading the peterson guide.

Thanks for the words of encouragement and suggestion! It looks like this might help ease us into things.

Ohh,... I never thought of that Mary. What a good idea!

That's what my mom uses.

A few more ideas...

If you can't id exactly, can you tell what type of bird? Can you tell if a bird is a "gull" or "sparrow" or "dove"? Also, when I took ornithology, we were encouraged to read the field guide before entering the field. and the prof emphasized looking at the pictures.

Keep a feeder right outside a window in by the dinner table (or the computer, like I do ) so you see the most common birds frequently.
