As a coastal person living on an island, my river experience is limited, so I was thrilled to hear that an associate of mine has just published River Wild, a river activity book for ages 9-12 (and older, if youare new to river studies).
Here's the publisher's description:
Kids will delight in learning about the formation of rivers, the water cycle, and the variety of habitats that exist along the length of a river in this introduction to the precious natural resource of rivers. All major rivers that run through the United States, Canada, and Mexico are discussed in regional chapters, including the Chattahoochee, Colorado, Columbia, Hudson, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Rio Grande, and St. Lawrence Rivers as well as many others. Kids will discover how rivers have shaped our history and learn of the issues that are currently facing these important waterways. More than 30 fun-filled activities including Build Your Own Dam, Huckleberry Finn Log Raft, Salmon Trap Game, and Settling Sediment are provided. Sidebars on river keepers around the country, and a complete resource section listing books, videos, and websites complete this activity guide.

Thanks, MacBeth. When I was a kid, I practically lived in the Delaware River, so I'm sorry my children are not getting those first hand experiences. This book looks the a good way to introduce the wonder of rivers to them!

Thanks for the heads-up, MacBeth. This looks awesome. It even includes our river ("Colorado")! This is a Chicago Review Press book. She has several other CRP books too, doesn't she - oceans, deserts, rainforests. All the Chicago Review Press activity books are first rate. They do such a good job. I just requested that our libary order it. They are great about that.

Oh, yea! We were planning on a river study this spring. We have so many wonderful rivers in our area. We will culminate the year with a rafting trip down the Nantahala or Ocoee. Anybody wanna join?
Also, this would be a great thread for us to start posting our ideas about a river study! I have tons of resources I'll have to pull out! Woo hoo!I am in heaven when I get to do this kind of stuff~aquatic biology is my speciality!

Theresa, I was just going to post about the book again. I just got my final copy, and it is just what I needed!
The book includes quotes at the beginning of each chapter that can be used for copywork. There are ideas, brief biographies, games, there's even a link to a poetry contest for river lovers! The illustrations are black and white water-color...very effective. The author covers geology and biology (including fossil hunting in South Hadley!), and is never heavy handed when she discusses environmental issues. This is a very encouraging book! Look for "rivers" in an upcoming issue of Wild Monthly

Our library did order it and I just got it today. It does look good. There is one glaring omission though, in my opinion. I can't believe it doesn't have maps (okay it does have three - the Yukon, Gila, and Missouri), but I would have thought it would have a detailed map for each region or at least one big one of North America with the rivers it highlights in the book.
Fact Monster has a good collection of US river info. Enchanted Learning has a decent map of the major rivers that you can print out. Or one could use this physical map and label the rivers yourself (and add smaller rivers it doesn't include).
Then in searching around I found this site National Atlas.gov Mapmaker - I had never seen it before. You can do some really cool things with it. If you click on the water section, then streams and waterbodies you can add rivers to the map. They aren't labeled but you get a sense of the total number of rivers/streams. You can then zoom in on individual areas.

Hi friends!
I happened upon this old thread and wondered if anyone would be willing to post some of their old river study plans?
I was thinking of making rivers our science this spring, and spend the summer kayaking once we're experts. I will have a 1st, 4th and 6th grader in the mix, and the 4 yo will tag along. The great news is that our library has the book MacBeth recommended. I would appreciate any other ideas!

Oh, how fun. I hadn't heard about this book. We live right on a river, so that could be a fun unit-study for the summertime.
