Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I just posted Journey North's Mystery Class announcement on my blog. The class (more like an activity) begins Monday.

Quote:
The Mystery Class investigation is an 11-week hunt in which students try to find 10 secret "Mystery Classes" hiding around the globe. The changing amount of sunlight at each site is the central clue. Students take an inspiring journey from knowing only sunrise and sunset times, to discovering exact locations of the 10 Mystery Classes. Mystery Class begins January 30 and ends May 5, 2006.

For classroom use, Journey North recommends that teachers divide their students into 10 groups, one group to track each Mystery Class. I was thinking it might be fun to do as a group project here. If anyone wants to participate, please drop me a note. If we get at least ten participating families, we could divide the 10 Mystery sites between us and report our findings here. Anyone game?

Addendum—

I've heard from a couple of families and have registered as a group ("4 Real Learning Homeschoolers"). The more the merrier, so if anyone else wants to join in, let me know! On Monday (when the Mystery Class begins), we'll divide up the ten mystery sites between the families. Each family can print out (or make) its own data sheets and graphs, and we'll share our findings as we go. Should be fun!

I'm game, I think. It sounds interesting, though I'm a bit concerned about the length of time-not ending until May. Ds has a pretty short attention span and I try to keep things to no more than two weeks or so or he loses interest. Would each of us need to register at Journey North, or would one of us register and forward the info to the rest?

Theresa,

I registered a group, figuring we could all pool our info (and that way no one family has to keep track of TEN separate mystery locations). They sent me a password which I'll forward to the participants once we're up and running.

I too was worried about being able to follow through--particularly with a baby arriving in April! But there isn't a heavy workload, and the data-gathering phase is only 11 weeks. After that, you're given other clues to help you figure out the mystery locations.

For 11 weeks, sunrise and sunset times for the ten mystery locations (called Mystery Classes) will be sent out every Friday. If we get at least 10 families participating in our group, that means each family would only be tracking the times for one Mystery Class. You use the sunrise & sunset times to calculate the "photoperiod" (amount of time the sun is up that day) and mark this number on your graph. You can also graph the photoperiod for your own hometown, but you don't send that data to Journey North—it's just for fun. (And it might be fun for us to compare photoperiods for the different locations in our group.)

So to recap--once a week for 11 wks, you would graph the photoperiod for your assigned Mystery Class location. After that, Journey North will send out other clues to help you figure out where in the world this Mystery Class is.

Starting April 21, all participating groups can send in their guesses for the location of the ten Mystery Classes. The answers are announced in May.

I'd love to have you join in, if you think your son would be interested!
