Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Last year I participated in the Wildlife Conservation Society's "SPARKS" program for encouraging science literacy in children at a local nature center. Since taking the class, I have recieved many wonderful resources in the mail. Today's was the best though! A copy of "Sharing Nature with Children" and "Sharing Nature with Children 2" and a "naturalist backpack" the contained several field guides specific to my area, specimen jars, bug net, bug house, binoculars, magnifying glass, tweezer, etc! What an awesome surprise.

I encourage any to take the class if you see it offered in your area. It is a nation-wide program. The class costs nothing, you actually get PAID to take to-- $50! plus a few hundred dollars worth of teaching aids. I took the class winter of 2008 and am still recieving items in the mail. I also met many interesting parents in the class. We have continued to do activities as a group, and to pass information about items of interest to each other.

How can I find out if it's offered in my area? Is there a website?

I have not been able to find an active link. I just happened to see an ad for it at my local nature center. The program is sponsored by the Bronx Zoo and the Department of Natural Resources. You could try your state's Department of Natural Resources.

I'm not sure either. I think the only reason I received a notice and invitation is because I had enrolled my kids in a garden club class one year (like 5 years ago!) so I must have still been on their mailing list.

However, locally, she said the zoo and botanic garden participated so I would first contact those in your area and ask to speak to someone in "education"...even specifically children's education.

HTH,

I went back and found the contact's email here and sent a request so I'll let you know if she knows how to find other classes.

Also, she sent me an email back on 7/14 that the book should be coming so hopefully mine will arrive in the next day or two! :-)
