Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone else seen this?

I picked it up yesterday at Goodwill of all places for 79 cents.

It looks to be from 1993. I can't get my VCR to turn on so I'm unable to watch it!!!

I haven't seen it (or heard about it) but I bet it would be interesting.

Rats, Paula! I was clicking on this thread hoping for a review! I'm on an Edith Holden kick as of late. I've been working on a post in my head for a long time, and now you're opening the floodgates!

It all started when I bought a used (but blank) 1979 Engagement Calendar in the early 90s, and I've been hooked ever since. I've had her book for years (and have been giving it as gifts), but I found that besides her The Country Diary of An Edwardian Lady, there's another book, The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady, which was her diary from 1905, the previous year before her Country Diary.

And I'm in the process of reading a biography on her, The Edwardian Lady: The Story of Edith Holden, compiled by Ina Taylor. I didn't know she was actually an illustrator for books, particularly children's.

Her work has always reminded me of Beatrix Potter, and once understanding she was an illustrator made me see even more of a similarity.

I picked up a book from the sale table at Mount Vernon this week, An Edwardian Lady's Flower Album, by Agnes Katherine Landale. While the painting is quite good, comparing to Edith Holden's work one can see more realism in the latter.

Besides these books, Kudos or Top That! publishing had some great The Country Diary kits (Dawn alerted a while back). I have Learn to Draw Wildlife in the Style of The Edwardian Lady, Learn to Draw Nature in the Style of the Edwardian Lady, and a Calligraphy kit which I can't find a link.

I have on my wishlist Flower Pressing and Painting with Watercolors, and then there's also an Herbal Remedies and Cross Stitch. Can't find those online anymore, either.

I saw that video for sale and was really wondering about it.

When I was searching the archives, I kept finding you referencing her book as one of your planning books for the year. And I quite agree. Her books are definitely jumping and inspiration points for our nature study. I am totally inspired for our notebooks. I know ours won't look a thing like her work...but definitely inspiration to go higher.

I have been pondering a lot about the purpose or goal of nature study, prodded on by the title page of The Country Diary:

Quote:
A facsimilie reproduction of a naturalist's diary

What is a naturalist? Are we being naturalist's in doing our nature study and keeping a notebook? If she was a naturalist, than that's what I want to be when I grow up!

And isn't it funny how often rabbit trails cross over or bring you back to the beginning? In tracking down some of her illustrated books, I realized she illustrated a book by Margaret Gatty's, the same author of Parables from Nature that I had just put in my list for nature study books this year.

Do you have a friend that could copy the vhs to a dvd so you could watch it? If not, pm me and I'll be that friend!

The movie is WONDERFUL.

From the back of the case:

Edith Holden's book, THE COUNTRY DIARY OF AN EDWARDIAN LADY has been published in 13 languages and has sold millions of copies all over the world. Central Independent Television's faithful adaptation stars Pippa Guard as Edith Holden and James Coombes as Ernest Smith and brings the nature diary to life, making each month a celebration in it's own right. Filmed entirely on location in and around Warwickshire, Dartmoor and London, THE COUNTRY DIARY OF AN EDWARDIAN LADY took nearly two years to complete.

Before the movie starts there is a 3 or 4 minute introduction all about her life. The movie is her husband finding the diary, and going through each month as she is talking about where she went and what she found. The photography is amazing. It really brings her book to life.

Jenn, I have both of her books! I am now ordering some of the ones you listed.

I know this movie is quite costly, but it is so good. I thought I'd try to contact the distribution company to see if they have more, or even how to get permission to make copies.

Just wanted to add my love for all things Edith Holden. Her Country Diary... is always displayed to a pertinent monthly page on our nature/seasonal display shelf and is our visual inspiration for the month.

This is a total rabbit trail off the original post, but if you're interested in fostering a budding naturalist (I AM!) you'll love this great book - Amateur Naturalist by Gerald and Lee Durrell. It is out of print, but definitely worth finding!!!! It wouldn't work with young children as a book they would read from independent study style - but mom could certainly read and lead. My older children have fallen in love with it, and it was the core of their Science/Nature Studies last year. They really took the information to heart and had fun gathering items from around the house to create "Naturalist bags" to take on their nature walks. Just wanted to plug this great book since Jenn mentioned all her favorite naturalist/country diary/nature journaling books.

Botany is a theme for my daughter next year, and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady will be the springboard and inspiration used for her studies. In building her plans I found The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady (on DVD) available at Netflix. Now, everyone go add it to your Q!

Thanks for the review, Paula! I can't wait to find a copy. I don't do Netflix but I'll find a way.

Yes, great book. That is another "naturalist" inspiration here. MacBeth recommended it on another list, especially for instructions on how to mount butterflies and such. The photos are just so great, and the "collections" definitely stir a young boy's heart (you know their love of pocketing finds and saving other treasures).

I had saved it on Netflix, but when I did, the dvd availability was "unknown" so it saved it for when it becomes available. Did it show up as available to you?

No...mine is saved as well. I'm hoping it will be available sometime soon. Has yours been in your Q and "saved" for a long time, Lindsay?

I didn't notice it at first as I was just building plans and searching for documentaries and nature study shows to further enhance her plans and adding as I went.

"To live content with small means..."

I did send a letter to ITV Network Center in London. They are now the copyright owners.

Paula, thank you for posting this. Our library interloan service has various copies available...yeah! There are actually different versions listed. 90 min. DVD or VHS versions...a 2 DVD, 300 min. set...a 4 VHS, 300 min. set. Perhaps this was done as a series...could they be focused on the four seasons? Can't wait to find out. It will be probably awhile before we get them though...our interloan requests are limited to ten at a time and we're backed up a ways with all the summertime requests we've made! Thank you again for sharing this!

It seems to have been a TV series according to Internet Movie Database.

Did you know that Noritake made dinnerware from 1982 of 1991 Country Diary-Edwardian Lady pattern? (Also in Octagonal shape.) Dh's aunt had some of these and they are just lovely. She and I share loves of Tasha Tudor and Edith Holden so we chat about this every time I visit.
