It looked like an otter to me, but a friend of mine (without seeing it or a picture) said it was something else which I can't remember the name. It had webbed feet and long whiskers. Anyone? I can't get the picture to appear here so gohere to see if you can let me know. TIA.

I don't think it is because this has a tail and is fairly small. From what I read about capybaras, they don't have a tail and get very large. We saw a whole family of these things, and they were small (largest was a small dog size down to a squirrel size)

Muskrat??? We saw something like that in one of our ponds and that is what we decided it is.
But a capybary, my ds10 would be thrilled to have on in our local pond.

Woodchuck or nutria? (Could you see orange teeth? If so, it's a nutria.)

I thought I heard ds say something about a nutria, I thought he was talking about a Nutra Grain bar. I had no idea there was such an animal. He just pulled out the National Audubon First Field Guide and saw the Nutria on the same page as the muskrat.

Yes! It had orange teeth. I looked up Nutria and that is what it looks like. I had never heard of such a thing. Thanks everyone. So neat to discover new things. The kids will be thrilled to know what it is for sure.

There was a contest in Florida or somewhere down south to see if anyone could come up with a way to make edible dishes featuring nutria...they couldn't.
Nutria are very destructive because they chew on mangrove roots, causing them to die. Some species of plants and animals can only live in mangrove swamps, so nutria are a huge problem.
My kids watched a show on mangrove swamps or some related topic and learned that nutria are sometimes made into alligator food.

Ok. I was not going to post it because it is rather gross but y'all started it....in my google search I clicked on a blog that had the cutest hand made capybara. I should try to find the link. I scrolled down to the bottom of the page and there was a little note that said the Church tried to classify them as fish so they could be eaten during Lent. YUCK! I'll stick with salmon.
