Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I don't think this post has any purpose; I just had to tell someone. We had a pit bull and another (big) dog come running into our yard this afternoon when my two older kids were out playing. They came right in with no mishap, but the dogs killed one of our chickens.

I'm angry about the chicken, but much more angry (and scared!) of a strange pit bull being loose in the yard while my kids are outside!!! The village office was of course closed at the time -- it's hardly ever open -- and I don't think "animal control" exists around here.

My dh wondered if having an air horn might be a good way to scare them off if they came back.

This is so uncanny! A friend of mine stopped by on her walk and was telling me about some neighbors a couple of streets over that have some pit bulls. The dogs were removed by animal control because they kept getting out and have knocked over a stroller with a baby in it.Scary!!

I am glad that nothing happened at your house.

Make sure you do report it so that if you have more trouble, you have a record of visits. I some places you need to have repeated visits to support serious action.

Angela, do you have a BB Gun yet? We used to keep one right by the door for stray dogs, coyotes, and cows that would get too close to the house. It'll make 'em scoot outta there.

Bottle rockets work great too, especially with bigger things like scary black angus bulls that really need to get back into the neighbor's fields or if you happen to be opposed to guns or live in a place that is opposed to guns.

We use a BB gun here too. Occasionally, a coyote will wander too close for comfort and there are wild dogs here. It's a pump BB gun so I can make it uncomfortable for a dog with longer hair.

Still, I hope there is a more permanent solution soon. This is scary!

Oh, that is scary! You might want to teach your kids what to do if they come back - don't run away or make eye contact! I was berry picking with a friend a couple of years ago, and a pit bull came sniffing around. My friend told me to keep my body turned away so that I could see the dog in my peripheral vision, but NOT facing it, and basically just ignore it. It left us alone, but kept bothering another woman who was clearly upset by the dog and kept reacting to it. (We kept telling her what to do, but she was too worked up to listen, and she finally just left.) I hope you aren't bothered again!
