Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm thinking of doing a unit study of sorts for my DD - age 7. She's interested in them, so thought I'd run with it.   She's a bit of a reluctant reader, and The Perfect Pony was the first book that she "devoured." Everything else has been painful .

Anyone have any links? books? picture books? read alouds? other suggestions?

For picture books, we've read:
Leah's Pony
Snow Riders
Bonny's Big Day
Saving Strawberry Farm

And, I found this on Amazon Listmania:
Horse Books for the Younger Set

Amanda Bennett has a unit study. Has anyone seen this? I'm wondering if it would be too advanced. I'm imagining these unit studies for the middle and older crowd.

Here's a past thread about Horse Movie Recommendations.

We studied horses last fall with 2 of my dds (at the time ages 5 and 8). They really enjoyed Fritz and the Beautiful Horses by Jan Brett and My Pony by Susan Jeffers. We read some others, but those were the two they really remember and talk about.

I don't have time right now to read your links, so sorry if these are books you are already familiar with.

We're starting this one at the end of the month. My children are really excited about it.

We loved doing a unit with Fritz and the beautiful Horses! There is a unit on HSS for that one! :)

Fritz unit study

THere are also a few other units about horses on HSS that we haven't done. And a library list for books about horses.

Horse resources from HSS

HTH!

(Mrs. Mack is one of the HSS units with the link I just posted.)

I remember loving the Billy and Blaze books when I was little and in love with horses.

Suzanne,

I think I have the Amanda Bennett unit study - I'm still unpacking but I'll give it a look and check...

One of my dd LOVES horses! She and I liked the Billy and Blaze books - my oldest LOVED The Black Stallion as a read aloud when she was 5 and she still loves it!

I'll check for that unit study and let you know!

Usborne has an abridged Black Beauty for young readers that I like.

There is also this lovely picture book:
Black Beauty's Early Days in the Meadow

The Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa books are a cutsey early reader series.

Some other picture books we've liked:
Winter Shoes for Shadow Horse (I just love Ted Lewin illustrations)
Calico the Wonder Horse - a Virginia Lee Burton classic
Winter's Gift - a little sad, but a story of hope

Thanks for the link to my Usborne site, Mary !

I don't have one on horses - dogs and oceans only - sorry, Suzanne!

We liked all of the Jessie Haas books here. Perfect for the emerging reader.

Then from there S. went straight to Black Beauty, Black Stallion, and all of the Marguerite Henry horse books which were her favorites.

I know your dd is too young for this program Suzanne, but file it away in the "maybe one day" file (and in case someone lurking might be interested) Beautiful Feet Books has a History of the Horse study guide that we've been working through this summer. S. has loved it!
