Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

How interesting, Cay!

When I was little, we lived in Houston and we'd go crawdaddin'. We'd take raw bacon on a string and we'd sucker 'em in on the line.

We did not eat them, however, and we did put 'em back after our fun, but just remembering catching 'em provides some really fun memories!

Thanks for sharing,

I grew up in Houston. We went crabbin' in Galveston frequently! Those little crabs used to scare me when they would try to crawl out of the ice chest!

I didn't realize there were crawfish in Houston!

Now my husband is from Altoona, Pennsylvania and he used to catch crayfish (that's what he calls them) in the stream by his house. The stream and crayfish are gone, but I just never thought those critters lived up North! I'm learning quite a few things through my "Yankee" husband.

Didn't want to start a new thread on crawfish, but now I got this tune in my head thinking of Maria's post. Don't know the name of this song, but I grew up singing similar lyrics like this. Here's the music.

Here's my version. Couldn't seem to find it anywhere on the internet like the way I learned it.

Refrain: Oh, you get a line, I'll get a pole, Honey
You get a line, I'll get a pole, Babe.
You get a line, I'll get a pole,
We'll go fishin' down the crawdad hole,
Honey, Baby, mine.

Oh, what you gonna do when the pond goes dry, Honey?
What you gonna do when the pond goes dry, Babe?
What you gonna do when the pond goes dry?
Sit on the bank catch an old horsefly,
Honey, Baby, mine.

Oh, yonder comes a man with a sack on his back, Honey.
Yonder comes a man with a sack on his back, Babe.
Yonder comes a man with a sack on his back,
Got more crawdads than he can pack,
Honey, Baby, mine.

Oh, man fell down and broke his sack, honey.
Man fell down and broke his sack, babe.
Man fell down and broke his sack,
Watch them crawdads backin' back,
Honey, Baby, mine.

I'll sell my crawdads three for a dime, honey,
Sell my crawdads three for a dime, babe,
Sell my crawdads three for a dime,
Ain't no crawdads good as mine,
Honey, Baby, mine.

Refrain: Oh, you get a line, I'll get a pole, honey
You get a line, I'll get a pole, Babe.
You get a line, I'll get a pole,
We go fishin' down the crawdad hole,
Honey, baby, mine.

Where did you grow up in Houston and when were you there?

I lived there in 1975 and then came back 1978-1981...we lived out on Fairbanks-North Houston road and I went to St. Theresa's Catholic School for 3rd and 5th grades; St. Jerome's for 6th grade and Campbell Junior High School for 7th and 8th.

Any chance you were there? Or am I really dating myself...

Btw, the speakers are not working right now on my pc but I so can hear that song in my head....

Grooving out to the living room to corral those precious treasures,

I was born in 1967 in Houston. The main place where I lived was near St. Theresa's, right near Memorial Park on East Cowan. My maternal grandmother was on Crestwood...walking distance to both St. T's and Grandma's house.

For 1st-5th grades it was St. Vincent de Paul...not close to us, but my mother liked the religious ed better there. We moved to Shreveport, Louisiana in 1978...I started 6th grade that year. So I'm a bit older and dating MYSELF!

We used to go downtown to Annunciation Church for the Novus Ordo Latin Mass on Sunday.

But I learned that Crawdad song in music class at St. Vincent's. We got a good dose of folk music.

I should clarify...that link is just to sheet music. I can't find a clip that plays the song in entirety.
