Hello! I am wanting to do a full month of outdoor "stuff" for April.
I'd like to include a week on each --
spring
plants
birds
butterflies
I already am pretty familiar with homeschool share, so I am using the wonderful butterfly lapbook from there for that week. I also found the unit for The Gardener on there.
What other resources can you give me? I may add in there Peter Rabbit...but we do FIAR, so I have used it several times before, still debating that one. :)
Thank you!

Here are some springy title's we've enjoyed:
Picture books:
A Fruit is a suitcase for Seeds, Richard
Birds build nests, Winer
Butterflies Fly, Winer
If you can get a hold of it, the Usborne Complete First book of Nature has great info on birds, butterflies and plants with nice pictures, at a level that is very good for young kids.
hth,

I am in the throes of planning a botany unit - will post as soon as done. (just our excuse to be outside as much as possible in Spring - before the Virginia summer hits early!!)

I requested everything on Elizabeth's garden unit and they've all come in. The bee books got me thinking about music, so yesterday I started thinking of a "soundtack." So far, I've thought of:
The Flight of the Bumblebee by Rimsky-Korsakov
Bumblebee Buzzzzz by Laurie Berkner
If I Were a Butterfly by Carey Landry
Dandelion by MaryLou Walker
Waltz of the Flowers by Tchaikovsky
Water Music by Handel
Oats and Beans and Barley Grow by Raffi
If I'm ambitious, we'll end up with an Itunes playlist.

I highly recommend A Packet of Seeds . It is such a moving story and the illustrations are beautiful. I love the name she picks for the baby at the end of the story.

Marilyn, I would love to read more about your unit!!
Our library had A Packet of Seeds, so I have that reserved, thank you!!
That song list sounds fabulous! We are a FIAR family, and we "rowed" The Bee Tree last year and LOVED it. That was a fun book with lots of great activities! We also listened to The Flight of the Bumblebee at that time and had a lot of fun buzzing around like bees while we listened! :)

I just saw this Rachel - wonderful ideas - I will have to add them to my plan.
I also have Draw 50 Flowers, Trees and Other Plants (Lee Ames) that my kids are enjoying.

Marilyn, thank you for sharing! I love reading other's ideas and seeing their booklists!!
I have a few questions from your plans, if you have time to answer.
1. What is the leaf in rubbing alcohol experiment?
2. What about the cut leaf?
Here are our plans this week...we are learning about plants this week as well.
Our plants unit
We are also using the cards from montessori materials to identify parts of a plant, flower, etc.
Parts of a flower cards
And homeschool share has some flower cards for identifying the most common types of flowers.
Flower identification cards

Thanks Candace for the great resources.
The rubbing alcohol experiment is very simple - put a fresh picked leaf in a glass jar of rubbing alcohol. The chlorophyll turns the alcohol green. We were learning about chlorophyll and photosynthesis today.
The other experiment is for respiration and transpiration
- put a fresh cut leaf in a ziploc bag. Examine it will a magnifying glass a few hours later. (moisture shows transpiration)
- put a newly cut leaf in a jar of water - place the jar in sunlight - examine a few hours later with a mag glass - leaf releases oxygen bubbles into the water.
I am going to link your blog post to my week 2 plan. I like the ideas for more picture books.
