Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi ladies! I am getting excited about all of our new nature ideas I have read about here and there...and now this week it is rainy and yucky!

So, I thought I would come here for inspiration! What kinds of things can you do for nature study in the rain? Any and all topics of study welcome!

We have done a little bit of bird watching and drawing in our journals...but most of the birds have stayed hidden to keep dry today...

Thanks!

Off the top of my head, you could catch and measure the rain water. You could test the water for Ph levels.

You could look for tracks left in the mud. (We've been having fun with that!)

Also, I read a neat tip in a nature activity book to draw a chalk outline around a puddle in your driveway or on your sidewalk. The day after the rain, check the size of the puddle (which will of course be shrinking due to evaporation). Your children could draw sketches of this process!

I'll be eager to hear others' ideas as we usually have a pretty rainy spring!

Here is a post I wrote on my blog a couple of years ago. I went back and fixed some broken links, so it should be good now. Let me know if anything is amiss!

One thing you might do is get on your rain gear and find those birds.
We have had some great rainy day hikes, as well, including an owl pellet hunt in a spruce forest. We love the beach in the rain. We had one great hike in the rain along a railway embankment, and the engineers blew the whistle as we waved.
I like to visit museums on rainy days.
And a good window can provide a view of the rainy world, perfect for nature drawing.
It's a great time to do weather experiments.
Invest in really good foul weather gear, so a rainy day does not put you off.
Sample puddles and look under a microscope.
Tracking is a great idea.
Cook outside and have a rainy day picnic.

One of my favorite wordless books is Peter Spier's Rain. Wow- I can't believe it is OOP and so expensive. It really is a marvelous book! Anyway, it follows the adventures of a brother and sister adventuring out on a rainy day. It is a perfect book for "ideas" for what to do in the rain - lots of nature and science study possibiliies without even trying. To me as a kid rain was always about catching earthworms (zoology) and racing sticks & making dams in the gutters (physics of water).
