Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am planning unit studies for next year based on what ds wants...so, not really rabbit trails, but I think I should still post here.

He told me he wants to learn more about coral reefs (specifically the animals who live there). This seems like an overwhelming topic to me. Any good reference books? Picture books? Websites?

Thanks :)

This book has TONS of detailed info and gorgeous pictures. I learned a lot from it! (I recommend the whole One small Square series. My kids love them.)

make sure you check out Learning Page You do have to register first but they have a science murral to make and fun fact sheets in the ocean section.

We started this year with reading Mr. Seahorse and got a book on coral reef life. Then based on what fish he met we ploted areas that Mr. Seahorse could be living on the world map. I then had animals under the sea cards. Really neat b/c the back side shows what the fish or sea life looks like in comparsion to a 5 year old child. We also used the shell sheetsfrom montessori materials. I just got a couple shell packs from Michaels. We also made a cool painting got the idea off of someone's blog here but can't find it now so hopefully someone may chime in. Anyway it was making a sea painting in layers. The background in light blue. Next waves in dark then you sprinkle salt on it. And then you form fish out of foil and use sharpies to color and blend with. Really neat!

We also read Night of the Moon Jellies to contrast sea life. And did the activities from FIAR. Our drawings are really neat!

We have the benefit of living in SoCal so we went to a living tidal pool and saw life there. Really cool!

We went to Sea World (go a lot anyway) and the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach.

I think that was it!

This thread is full of great book suggestions for oceans in general. There is one I suggested there that is visually amazing. Making Sculpey coral reef scenes like these would be great fun. Over in the Ocean In a Coral Reef

One of our favorite picture books takes place on a coral reef. It is The Sign of the Seahorse. Absolutely beautiful illustrations and an intriguing story. Highly recommend it!
When you get closer to your unit study and have plans laid out, would you share? I would be very interested. I really like the sculpey clay idea of Mary's, too.

God Bless,

Thanks so much, ladies!

Someone submitted a unit/lapbook on Coral Reefs to HSS this past week, so I think I'm all set!

We just checked this book out. Our library just added it to the shelves -- even though it's a 2003 book. We are just mesmerized by the gorgeous clay illustrations. And my boys always like books that I sing. This is the tune to "Over in the Meadow".
