I was reading here..


And was feeling inspired...BUT worried about how to do all these things around our in-ground sprinkler system. Is this a valid concern? If so, how should I approach it? TIA.

Dawn, I have a tiny yard and an in-ground sprinkler. I tend to keep most of the vulnerable things on the edges, where the sprinkler has a hard time reaching. In the case of the garden, I plant the hardier things in front where they can break the pressure. When the seedlings are young, I put a board up to stop the spray.

When I began gardening when we first moved in, I did make a serious mistake--I failed to look at a plan of the sprinkler hoses, and I put my pitchfork right through one hose! Luckily, it was a nice clean hole, and we repaired it easily.

The compost pile is in an open box, so it does quite well with a sprinkle. The pond (which I have since removed as the kids and dogs needed the space) was fine, though it was very full all the time! Keep stepping stones off the sprinkler heads. Again, brush piles should be kept on the edge of the yard.

I live 2 blocks outside of New York City, and we get quite a wide variety of wild life, including possums, many species of birds, bats, snakes (there are no local venomous snakes), toads, and, of course, invertebrates.

Keeping a wild backyard is especially helpful during pregnancy, when you just can't do all the hiking you might like.
