Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Most of my thoughts are for the bald eagle specifically.

This is a book I really like-Soaring with the Wind: The Bald Eagle. I like Gail Gibbons' books and illustrations for that age group. It has a nice section at the end with info/facts about bald eagles.

It would be a great time to talk about endangered species, why they become endangered, how they are protected, and how they rebound. The bald eagle population has recovered significantly and is scheduled to be removed from endangered species list. This is a major success story for protecting endangered species.

"The bald eagle has rebounded from the brink of extinction to reach population levels that have not been seen since World War II. This success is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of federal and state agencies, conservation organizations and individuals across the nation," said Service Director H. Dale Hall. "Our overriding concern has been to ensure that bald eagles continue to thrive once they no longer need the protection of the Endangered Species Act and the actions we take will meet that goal."

Since it was because of the brittleness of the eggshells (due to DDT) that caused them to become endangered, a unit could also include egg shell experiments.

There are lots of eagle cams out there on the web. This isn't necessarily the best time of year to catch them though since they aren't nesting. Here is a sampling of ones we've watched in the past.

Study eagles on U.S. money like the quarter and paper currency. Until 1933 there was actually a coin called the eagle which was a base-unit of denomination issued only for gold coinage by the United States Mint. The eagle was the largest of the four main decimal base-units of denomination used for circulating coinage in the United States prior to 1933.

Tons of U.S. postage stamps through the years have featured the eagle. It would be fun to try to collect different stamps featuring eagles.
And speaking of stamps this is a clever way to look at history - The Bald Eagle's View of American History (It's a little PC in places but is clever none-the-less.)

Eagles are on the State Seals of many of our states. Find which states include the eagle.

Find out about why Ben Franklin wanted the turkey as the national bird and not the eagle.

Look for the eagle used in logos or as a mascot - examples: Philadelphia Eagles and United States Postal Service. You could do a scavenger hunt of eagle symbols when you are out driving in your town.

We do think alike, don't we! I really liked the lapbook - many great ideas and visually appealing.

Something else I thought of to include in a study is to visually make a nest the size of an eagle (with a cirlce of rope or something) so that the children can really get a sense of the immense size of the nests!

Also a focus on the importance of the eagle to the Native Americans. How the feathers are used in ceremony and the esteemed nature of the bird to them.
