Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are slowly easing back into our school year. I purchased Aplogia's Zoology 1 book. I caught one of the author's lectures at our homeschool convention. I like the idea of the notebooking aspect of the book. It is supposed to read like a book, etc. I thought this text might help us this year with everything going on around here with my mom, and not having a lot of time to plan things out.
So, I started reading this to the children and guess what I saw? Their eyes were glazed over and they had blank looks on their faces. . Obviously they were not connecting with this material presented this way at all.
What would you do? Move to the next chapter? Scrap the whole thing?
I do have some Thornton W. Burgess books, I was thinking of reading from these, notebook pages every one to two chapters. And then their Nature Journals. Is this enough? I know it would be enough for the younger ones, but what about my 10yr old?
Any ideas?

I think the burgess books are super. You could easily read a chapter or two, have the children choose one animal to draw/notebook and have the older one do some additional research.Ds 10 could even look up facts and type them out for the little ones to glue onto their notebook pages.
For a 10 year old, just make sure to supplement with lots of good DK or Usborne type books, a few experiments or projects, and he will be fine.
