Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In a couple of weeks we are about to go on our longest camping trip yet - 2 weeks.

I am very good at outfitting my children for outdoor weather - but not so good when it comes to getting things for myself. There is so much out there - I am bewildered - for instance I have seen rain jackets anywhere from $35 to $200!

What are your favorite outdoor weather clothes? We will be near the seashore so I am trying to prepare for wet, sand, and wind. And I am thinking a wet, damp, chilled mommy might not be a good thing!

So moms, what are your favorite outdoor must-haves to keep a mommy happy? And specifically has anyone tried "beach trekker" type shoes? They look like a rugged closed toe sandal.

Thanks!

This is not at all about outdoor wear, but the single thing that makes me happiest at the beach is dusting powder. A little of this stuff after a day in the sand, and the sand comes right off without sticking .

I love my Keen shoes. They feel like sneakers and look like sandals.

Can't remember whether I bought this jacket or this one, but LL Bean is always a good bet if you want to keep from getting wet. They're also good for beach sandals

Thanks for the tips!

I never would have thought of the baby powder after the beach but it makes perfect sense.

I am determined to get myself outside more this school year as well - I realized that while the children are more than happy to go out in all kinds of weather - I have turned into a bit of a weather wimp and I after thinking about it - it really is due to not providing appropriate outdoor wear for myself.

Hi Donna,

We just returned from a longish camping trip with Chari in Mt. Shasta and then some more camping and traveling along the northern California coast and it was everything you described - wet, sandy, and windy (the coastal part). I don't think I have anything special as far as clothing, although I did purchase a pair of those beach trekker type shoes from Sears (they are Land's End brand.) I think they were $40.00. They aren't exactly waterproof, but they are comfortable enough for hiking. My kids have the waterproof shoes from LE and used them in the rivers and tidepools. I believe they make these in adult sizes. I have a fleece vest and an old nylon (unlined) jacket that together or separate were enough to keep me warm and/or dry.

Hope that helps! It sounds like a wonderful vacation. We're actually setting off again for another week of camping in the Seqouias. This trip should not be as damp or sandy. :)
