Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking for some picture book ideas (and even non-fiction) and even some activities about turtles that would be appropriate for my 3.5 yo.

I seem to be stuck...and need some inspiration! :)

Hi Ami, we love All About Turtles by Jim Arnosky!! He's our favorite children's book author/naturalist so far and this one has lots of good pictures and readable.

Maybe you could do a terrarium and get a small turtle for your little one to observe. Also, in my Little Saints Preschool program they have a craft to make a turle by painting a paper bowl and then cutting out geometric shapes (such as on a turtles shell) and pasting them on. The bowl is inverted before you paste and then on the bottom side (the bowls rim) you paste feet and a tail and a head. Pretty cute and I remember my kids naming their turtle and keeping him/her for a pet for quite some time

Just a few thoughts, let us know what you come up with!

A fun counting book: Turtle Splash: Countdown at the Pond

You can make little bread loafs that look like turtles:

Do you live close to a beach? There was a really cute giant turtle sand sculpture in the June issue of Family Fun magazine. It could be toned down and made smaller. It sure was cute. Sorry there isn't a link on-line

If you have the room in your yard, you can build a turtle pen. We always had one growing up, so it seemed the natural thing to do with our children YOu need hardware cloth, about 1/2 inch size wiring, one side of which you bury about 6 to 8 inches deep, in a circle (as big or as small as you like), leaving the upper part as a fence, oh, about a foot to a foot and a half high. You can bury a kiddie pool in it if you want to have big water turtles (but your kids will have to keep it constantly replenished with water) or a regular-sized dishpan buried in the dirt will work, too, for land turtles. We actually dug a pond and concreted it with QuikCrete---we still had to keep it replenished with a hose, tho I have seen people with elaborate water-garden style turtle ponds, complete with pumps. Ours is pretty primitive. We planted the turtle pen with indigenous plants and put a dead log in it for burrowing as well as lots of leaves and pinestraw.

This is a really fun project for children. Lots of good times spent around the turtle pen (that is, until our dog decided to develop a taste for turtles...we have a temporary moratorium on turtles after seeing the dog eat one too many of our turtle pets! )
