We found a strange red fungus or slime mold on a log in our woods that we haven't been able to ID. Here are some pictures Any ideas? FYI - it had no stalk/stipe.

I don't know. If so, we picked it before it started to stink! I am mystified and curious now. We saw the beginnings of another red slime like mold last night on our walk through our back paths. I am going to watch it to see if it develops similarly. Hmm. We did have elegant stinkhorns last year in our shade garden, but they started out white/brown.

Aha! I think it is a Lycogala epidendrum or wolf udder. I found it through Tom Volk's fungi site - always interesting! Thanks for looking. Now I am intrigued by this odd phylum Myxomycota in the Kingdom Protista!

Marjorie, I had to post here and let you know we have also had a mysterious "something" growing in our yard, and thanks to a comment left at my blog I've learned it is called the Dog Vomit Fungus

, though really it is a slime mold.

Dawn, another - more appetizing name for this is 'scrambled -egg Slime (Fuligo septica). Tom Volk has an interesting entry
on this slime mold. It was his June 1999 "Fungus of the Month" even though it is not a fungus. Check it out. I loved your picture of the Leucocoprinus fragilissimus. They are popping up throughout our woods, such a gauzy lemon yellow. Once you start looking for fungi - and slime molds - they seem to be everywhere!
