Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been gifted with 40 or so backcopies of Ranger Rick and Owl Magazine (natural science). I was wondering how I could incorporate them into real learning.

The trouble being that I think they are being used for "looking at the pictures" and they are getting ruined by our littlers... I think that this is a WONDERFUL resource and would like to get the most out of it.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Rebecca, we absolutely adore our Ranger Ricks! When our issue arrives in the mail we treat it as science for that week. There is also an online educator's guide available.

Rebecca,
I've been meaning to do this with my back issues! Your thread has inspired me to get off my duff and do this project. It might take a little time (you've got plenty of that right ) but maybe over the last of the summer, you could go through them one at a time and make a list of the article subjects. It would be fairly easy to make a word or excel document based on your lists of subjects and sort them by categories - botany, animal science, etc. Seems like it might be fun, then you could just check your lists when you're covering a subject and you'd know what issue to find your article to support and maybe springboard further study.

Don't know if this helps at all, but I really need to get started on this project because I hate to think of wasting good resources. Thanks for motivating me!

Jennifer,

I did start doing a list, (on paper) then we were moving, and "where'd that list go?" I'd thought of listing them and sort of storing them, and just taking them out when we're interested in learning something about say "the far north". So I'll ask dh if he can help me out with the computer part. That way, I thought we'd use them like a reference source... Maybe they wouldn't just get ruined that way.

Some of them date back to 1977! And they were in wonderful shape, but they look "used" now.

Thanks for the thoughts ladies!

Rebecca, before they get *used* beyond recognition, perhaps you could choose a topic based on some of the articles cut out the nicer pictures and little vignettes and paste them into lap books. I'm not a lap book guru, but perhaps some others on this forum who are can help you get started.

It's just another idea.
