Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

or are they tortoise?

We found about 6 of the same whatever kind wandering the neighborhood, ever so politely strolling the sidewalks, and put them out in the backyard. Tonight when we put the dog out to "do the do" we found several of them were off in various areas digging backwards with their hind clawed feet. Are they just burrowing? Are they making nests? These are not areas near the fence line, so I don't think they are just trying to escape. No amount of noise would keep them from their work, not even the barking nipping dog. Although they have been known to let out what I think is the turtle equal of a hiss, but just sounds like a long sufferring sigh.

I'll try and get pictures on my blog tomorrow. Very curious happening around here with the critters these days...

I think it is egg laying season for turtles. Yesterday I encountered a very large and aggressive snapper crossing the road, making a bee line for a pond.

Peace,
Nancy

YES!

We saw one in our driveway after church last Sunday and when dh went over to inspect, he found it was a snapper! Knowing I won't let an opportunity for nature study pass us by, he very, VERY carefully slid the turtle (about the size of a medium frying pan) into a rubbermaid tub with the turtle hissing at him the whole time. The whole thing was so funny...dh stowing a turtle in a rubbermaid tub and running up to the house through the rain ...oh, the lengths we go to for science around here!

Anyway, when we examined him on the carport (keeping our respectful distance) we noticed that "he" had laid an egg! ...The added bonus: no more need to guess how to tell our snapper's gender!

Great! I can't wait to see what happens with the eggs! We turned our turtle loose on the same day that she laid her 1st egg. I don't know where she is now and sadly, she somehow broke the 1 egg she laid in the rubbermaid tub...

If we'd known she was going to lay an egg we never would have bothered her!

I updated the blog because I decided to dig them up and bring them in to hatch. There were EIGHT eggs in the hole! And wowzies! That one turtle laid eight eggs the size of half-dollar coins. Ouch. Makes me glad not to be a turtle.
