Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I saw this Identiflyer this weekend. I thought it was neat, and you can add cards to expand the dictionary. Anyone have it or talk me out of it? I thought it might be a good Christmas gift....

I know there are sites with bird songs....ds and I have been listening for a while. But sitting in front of a computer isn't always ideal.

This has been on my wish list for quite a while. I like the alarm clock they have too - waking up to different bird calls would be much nicer than the annoying radio guy!

Okay, I just thought about that alarm clock a little harder - we've been sleeping with the windows open, so any bird call coming from the alarm clock would be lost in the chorus from our backyard!    I guess we'll have to stick with the radio, at least when the weather is nice!

Dawn has it.
I've wanted one for a long time, but the cards are so expensive.

Oh, I love this! I'd love to get the frogs card too-that would be fun to listen to the differences.
The cards are expensive at $9.95 each but if it's a christmas gift then you could give more cards each yr or at b-days.
At least it's something that spans across ages and can be used for many years.

We have one that was given to us as a Christmas gift. We have four cards in all. My kids love it!

we have it and 3 cards for yardbirds (series one, two and eastern.) i don't know that you'd need many more cards. the identifyer itself came with one card. we keep it in the backpack and then take it out when we hear a bird and are trying to figure out who it could be. we've tried bird song cds and they are too complicated for us. i also like that it comes with an earplug so that you can listen quietly while you try to identify the birds.

Jenn, I do have one. I received it as a present last year from my in-laws. I only have three cards, but we love it! Sometimes we use it as a game, one of us selects a song and we all have to guess what bird it is.

It has helped us identify a bird or two in the past year. I'm terrible at bird songs - much better at visual identification, but I'm getting better. The challenging thing is, is so many birds have more than one song!

We also have it. Got some money at Christmas for the kids and decided to get this as my dd has been eyeing it for some time. I think it really is worth the investment. Our set had two cards that came with it (Yard birds 1 and 2). We've slowly been adding the cards for our specific geographic area and interest cards. We now also have the Western Yardbirds and the Birds of the Night (owls mostly - for my ds). It really does help with song identification and the kids are getting pretty good.

We really enjoy it, too. My dc can identify a lot of birds by their calls now. I highly recommend it!

Thanks, everyone. I'm sorry I didn't search the archives for this thread that Dawn mentioned them already.

I thought it was such a neat tool, but didn't want just a gadget that wasn't accurate or a waste of time, but your answers have shown me that it seems to be pretty useful.

Jenn, we went back and forth on getting one, and decided against it. We went with a Peterson CD set of bird songs (there are at least of few of these, I'm not sure which we got -- but we "test-drove" them through the library first to decide which we wanted).

I am so glad we got the CD instead of the Identiflyer, because it gives us so many bird songs. It even breaks them down into sections (i.e., similar songs, different birds w/in same family, etc.) and quizzes you.

We'll probably get another set of the bird CDs. There was one type of Peterson CD that we didn't like. It just had the name of the bird followed by the call and moved onto the next name and call. The other type is much better.

Thanks a lot for this post ....

I just spent a bunch of $$

Actually, we are big bird people and have at least 4 feeders full at any given time. My kids have been getting more and more interested in birds and while I'm good at sight I have no idea about sounds excepts for cardinals and robins. And we're doing lots of nature trips this summer from the mountains to lakes to the beach so it will come in handy I'm sure.

So I went searching for the best deal and got the Identiflyer and 10 cards
Good thing I just sold some curriculum to boost my paypal!

Just saw that at Costco this weekend. I checked my budget and I'm heading back today to pick it up. You're right - it is awesome. The really great thing about this book is the fact that it covers sooooo many birds, and supports the audio song with an image of the bird and a short description. The audio is really good on this book! I'm concerned about durability issues, as we love bird identification around here, and tend to pack up a number of resources in the backpack and take them to the river or on a nature walk. This might have to be a stay-at-home supplement for us, and the bird identiflyer can be tucked in the backpack. In any case - you're right Jenn - this is a really great bird identification resource.
