We just got back from a trip to Florida. One part of our trip we visited the Clearwater area. Dh's aunt lives near on a golf course. I don't know if one can id from this info I have. Four lime green birds flew by her back window. They were flying in a group. I couldn't catch the beak shape, but they were average size song birds (blue jay, cardinal, robin size) and the color was so brilliant. I looked up in several Florida books. I thought they might be female buntings, but other books said might be monk parakeet? or some kind of canary parakeet?

If they were one of the latter, aren't those are caged birds that are freed at some point? Would they travel in groups?

Not very many clues...I'm new at all this. But the color was so bright and brilliant I wondered if anyone else has seen these.

As an aside, I have to thank this forum for opening my eyes to Nature study. It enhanced our trip everywhere, identifying shells, birds, and other flora and fauna.

It might very well be parrots. When I lived in Fla. we would often see flocks of light green parrots. I didn't do nature study then so I couldn't identify them:-)

We just watched the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill the other night. There are several cities that have a parrot population; they are escaped and dumped pets. They live together and when they fly through the air is is magnificent; all those bright green birds!

In Florida the monk parrots are actually considered feral parrots now, (just like the feral cats). The flock you saw, assuming they were monks, is generations old by now. We have a flock of 12 or so that flies over here in Boca Chica twice a day, and at our last marina we had 2 couples that would hang out across the basin.

I think it's pretty cool to have parrots flying over! They are not exactly songbirds though, I'll tell you that! I mean they're very squawky, and that is probably the number one reason they were released from captivity - too loud.
