Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dear Faithful Prayer Warriors,
Although every Feb/march I’m feeling tired, this time around I’m having more difficulty discerning my fatigue level. I can’t tell if I’m “flogging a tired mind/body” or if I’m just being too lenient on myself.

In December I found out my thyroid had dropped considerably which does cause fatigue. But now my levels are normal but I still feel pretty drained. (I do feel better with the increase in synthroid but not amazingly so.)

I think also I’m “confused” with my new baby. She’s 16 months old, acts like an eight month old, and I’ve only been with her for 4 months. So, I think this adds to my “internal confusion” on how to deal with myself.

Last month I did ask a priest, but as soon as I say my thyroid dropped, the discussion seemed to end: “Oh well you’re sick.”

Would you mind saying a few prayers for me so that I can discern my way out of some confusing feelings. I’m sure I’ll be feeling a lot stronger with your help.

Helen, as you probably know, I have a thyroid problem too. They can be very hard to manage and there can be flare-ups. It is typical for thyroid suffers to get worse in winter, something to do with the decreased amount of sunlight.

You say your readings have settled again and that you are in an increase level of thyroxin (synthetic thyroid replacement) but that you are not feeling much better. This can happen when your body has these flare-ups and often the root cause is your body becomes 'resistant' to your T4. Our bodies take the T4 and converts a big part of it to the active T3, bodies can become resistant to converting the sythetic T4 to the T3 you need and will not feel good without it! I have had two years from hell with this and life is so wondeful at present after finding the right treatment for this (it's just normal but I am so delirious with normality!! - and thank God everyday, many times a day) There is a blood test you can ask for to test to see if you are resistant to this conversion. Also I found a doctor who got me off the synthetic and put me on the natural extract - the natural extract contains what is in the thryoid naturally, T4, T3, T2, T1 and goodness knows what other subtle substances that are in the thyroid. So it takes the pressure off your body to have to make this conversion. Sadly people on medication often have this conversion difficulty as well, that's why life can be of 'the living dead' despite being medicated. I had enormous dip that started 4 months after Michael's birth (he is now 2 and 1/4) and I never came off my medication for my body to go down like that, it became resistant.

If your doctor is not open to exploring this properly with you, you need to pray for God's guidance and to find the doctor you need who will help you with the quality of life needed to raise the families we have. The difference for me now is enormous, families don't do well without mum functioning well and so it is a priority to keep as best we can.

This is a start Helen, you may have questions, I am also more than happy to lend you books that really helped me understand my thyroid problems properly, I will also give you links soon to websites that talk about this, that also give lists of doctors in the US who know how to deal with the subtle difficulties of the thyroid.

I will remember you in prayer especially Helen, I feel for you very much.

Oh, Helen, I'll pray for you. I have trouble "discerning fatigue," too.

Helen,

Confused feelings are also a sign with thyroid troubles. I have often felt confused and struggled over simple steps in my daily homeschooling. I don't have hope of planning my curriculum to any great depth when my thyroid is under presssure, whatever is our natural pressures at the time, the feelings of confusion seem to focus on those aspects in particular.

At present I am shocked at my level of proficiency in the areas that had been serious stumbling blocks for me as recent as late last year, it is a shock as I have forgotten what it feels like to be on top.

I would tend to think, that while you have an enormous work load that requires alot of mental concentration and energy, if you were feeling well physically you would probably cope much, much better.

Can you remember how you have been in past situations like this? This might be a guide for you to know what you usually cope well with.

Thank you for indulging me Anne. After most of my adoptions, my thryroid plunged. So, this is pretty normal. I've been wondering if I'm experiencing a bit of a low thyroid-lag effect. My 40 year old body not quite catching up.
(It's fun to admit to being 40 around here ).

I'm always low in Feb/March.

This picture sums up my usual feeling toward the month of March:

The Bargemen on the Volga

Helen, it is intriguing you saying that your thyroid plunges after each adoption. My thyroid condition (which is common) plunges after every birth and there are distinct physical reasons for it connected to pregnancy, birth and brestfeeding - it sounds so much like your body is so completely physically in tune with these babies in some mysterious way?

God Bless, Anne

Should say too, that as women approachs/go into menopause thyroids can also be effected in the way they do in pregnancies/postpartum.

Helen I am praying! I too had to switch from synthroid to Armour Thyroid (natural from animals) this may be what Anne is refering to. I was on the medication and really confused and dragging as you stated, I am slowly feeling better!

Thanks Anne for the info, I would love the links you were refering to. I have had Hypo thryoidism since I had radiation for Hodgkins Disaease.

Helen, no matter how tired you may be feeling, that sense of humor will always keep you buoyant!

I almost died laughing when I clicked on the link. (Can you imagine that as a blog banner?! LOL!)

Oh, Helen, what a perfect visual metaphor! But it's a metaphor we hope you can shake. Praying for you ....
