Last night we noticed a puddle of water on the floor in the living room and realized the radiator was leaking. I called a plumber today and as we suspected the pipe needs replaced. At this point how much it will cost is unknown, it all depends on how well the work goes and what happens.
In an old house like this pipes can be pretty bad and care has to be taken or you can cause more damage and thus more work and more cost...you get the idea. The plumber came recommended so I feel OK about that but if this takes hours and hours the bill will shoot through the roof.
Add to all this my dh is gone until Sunday (on a drill - he's National Guard) and I can't call him to consult on this so it's all on me which makes me somewhat nervous.
I just feel the weight of the decision and frankly I don't know why but I am nearly in tears about all this (maybe it's hormones).
The plumber went to get parts and just got back. He's shutting the furnace down now so please pray we can get this fixed quickly so it doesn't cost too much but also so the house doesn't get too cold in the meantime.
**The plumber just commented to me that "wow that's an old boiler" Yeah I know but a new one just isn't in the budget right now!
---------------------------------------
Update: He's gone. $800 later we have heat and no leaks.
The man was really nice (he's a friend of a friend) and truly did all he could to keep the price down but our system is so old and it took all day just to fix this. After 4PM he should have charged me time and a half but he didn't.
He is a Christian man and throughout the day we had some nice conversations. Before he left he told me that he was amazed at how calm and joyful our house was, especially with 10 children. He said "whatever your doing keep doing it, it's working".
I'm a little sticker shocked and just talked to dh (who handled the news better than I thought he might) but I know Our Lady will work all this out and provide for our needs despite this unexpected bill.
Thank you for your prayers I am sure they helped.

Praying...hoping you're too much in the cold and this won't cost too much.
Maybe there are junkyard parts to be found for interim fixes?

Praying...I hope dh can call you soon...things always seem to break when my dh is away, too, so I can relate.

Is he done yet? Praying it is easily fixed Michelle.
BTW, I found a bag of material and thought about your material diet last night. If you need a fix...

OH, praying and sympathising Michele . We have just bitten the bullet and ordered a new boiler - but ours was "old" when we bought our house 14 years ago. For the last few years it has moved on from "old" to "obsolete".

Did you read my latest entry on my sewing blog? I'm rethinking the diet...although dh thinks "we have enough fabric to live on" .
