I hesitate to post this but I am really worried so hope that I can ask for your prayers.
Last night dh suddenly came out with, 'How do we know heaven exists? Where is it?' and then launched into a great long list of questions about the faith. Really fundamental stuff about whether God exists, has He been there since the beginning of time, etc.
Lots of this was from his perspective as a scientist (which I don't share) and I couldn't really answer him. Everything I said seemed to annoy him (especially suggesting that he pray about it). My final comment, only half in jest, that I'd divorce him if he gave it all up, really really didn't help. (I'm ashamed.)
Anyway, this is longwinded way of saying that if anyone could spare a prayer for him, and for me, I'd be so grateful. I'm sure this is temptation because he's recently been talking about going up a notch, joining Opus Dei, etc., and the devil doesn't like it.

Yep, it could be an attack. Just keep praying, speak kindly and positively and make sure he feels loved and respected by you.
I'll pray.

Praying, Elizabeth.
Is he doubting, or is he trying to grasp the Truth so that he can understand? If he's a cradle Catholic most of the stuff could be because someone told him so, but he's never sought out the process to make it his own beliefs. It's a fine line, but can you see the difference?
It's lofty thoughts, and I'd suggest throwing a little John Henry Newman his way, Thomas Aquinas and C.S. Lewis to name a few. Father C.J. McCloskey often recommended Newman for those "intellectuals" -- scientists, politicians and such who were seeking the Truth.

We went through this several years ago. My husband was trying to make sense of everything he'd been taught. They had left so much out and no one he asked seemed to truly understand the faith well enough to explain. I prayed harder than I'd ever prayed before. The result of it has been a deepening of his faith. I don't think he ever really lost it, just wanted to understand it.
I'll pray with you Elizabeth!

Elizabeth,
Praying for your dh and for you, as well. It does sound like a spiritual attack--saying a St. Michael right now...

Praying...it's often very difficult for scientists to take that leap of faith.

You and your husband are in my prayers. Faith is such a gift and the Evil One stops at nothing to try to snatch it away.

My husband went through a bit of this recently and the outcome was a man of stronger faith than before. He's also of a scientific mindset. I share this scientific view and must admit to often having the same questions.
These questions don't have answers that can be scientifically proven, obviously. But, the more I learned about biology, genetics in particular, the more convinced I've become. It's amazing that life even exists on this planet at all - the notion that it was all some sort of cosmic accident takes more faith than a belief in God, IMHO.
C.S. Lewis has written some great stuff on this, as has already been mentioned. I've only read part of one work, "The Screwtape Letters" and it was great. Would your husband be interested in reading works like this?
But the best defence against such attacks is a good offence. I'll echo what everyone here has already said and PRAY HARD!
Praying for your husband...
