Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I learned last night that he's sent the bishop a letter requesting release from his duties. He's fallen in love, but wasn't married when he was ordained a deacon. I'm sure the parish is shocked. The parishioners need prayers, too.

As a deacon he is allowed to be married isn't he? I thought only priests had to be celebate. Every deacon I have known has been married. In fact the deacon that performed the blessing of my marriage was married (but they chose to be celebate anyway).

I will pray for him to follow God's Will in his life but I am not sure I see a conflict. Shouldn't he be allowed to continue his duties as a married deacon?

Can someone with more knowledge enlighten me?

Blessings,
Krisann

Krisann, deacons ARE allowed to be married, provided that they are married prior to their ordination. They are not permitted to marry after ordination, even if they are widowed.

My prayers are with your parish.
I imagine he didn't come to this decision easily. I pray he will feel welcomed in the parish and continue to attend.

Krisann, we BRIEFLY discussed deacons in class last night. We were told there are two types...married & single. I just searched online to have a better understanding of what the problem is.

There are two types of deacons: a transitional deacon, those studying and preparing for the priesthood who first are ordained deacons before being ordained priests, and permanent deacon, those whose ministry for life is intended to be the diaconate. Permanent deacons may be married or celibate.

I'm guessing that the deacon Nancy is asking for prayers for is (was) a transitional deacon.....on his way to becoming a priest. He has decided his vocation is marriage, not being a priest.

There is much more info online....why he can't just switch over & become a permanent deacon and also that some diocese choose not to have permanent (married) deacons. Interesting stuff. I don't know when I will learn everything!!

Nope...he was a permanent deacon. My understanding is that once you are widowed (post-ordination), you can't marry again. At any rate, he says his life circumstances don't permit him to serve as a deacon any longer. I have no idea what that means.
