Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One of our hamsters got out of its cage last night and is loose in the house. I am no lover of hamsters -- we only got them because I didn't want the responsibility or cost of a dog, but the girls really wanted a pet.

I can't stand the thought of a rodent running around here free somewhere. And I really can't stand the idea of it dying somewhere behind a wall or something.

Could you please say a prayer that we find the hamster soon? Thanks so much.

Oh, Irene....we've had some loose hampsters here before. If fact one is a very funny story - but anyway, I will pray he is found soon. Have you considered one of those humane mouse traps - might work for a hampster also. And along those same lines when I was looking for a link for the traps I found this clever suggestion. I bet it would work for a hamster if he was hungry!

I know what you mean. Against my better judgement my 17 yos at the age of 7 saved for and bought himself an iguana (I figured it was safe, it wouldn't grow to it's full 6 feet until Joe was in college and he could take it with him ). But then, Spike got out of his cage (my son still won't tell me who left the top loose ) and we found Spike a week later, completely dehydrated and smelling less than perfect.

I'm sending up a prayer to St. Francis that Brother Hamster is found soon....

Oh my goodness, Irene! I can only say that you are much more patient than I would be...I would have posted a desperate prayer request within an hour of missing the hamster! Of course, in our house, it would be a much more desperate situation with two cats and a dog to "help" find him.

I don't like hamsters as pets...we have had 3 BAD experiences with them...so lots of prayers coming for you to find and contain your little rodent very, very soon!!!

Our hampster got out of his cage once and I couldn't find him. Then late one night, after everyone else was in bed, I was watching TV in the dark and suddenly I saw a hampster shadow outline in front of the TV ! Woke me right up.

Praying you find your hampster quickly.

I want to pass along a sad hamster story involving my friend's children's hamster to give you a heads up. Their hamster went behind a dresser. They tried to move the dresser away from the wall by pulling first one side away from the wall, then the other side (I'm sure we've all moved heavy furniture pieces this way before). So, guess which side the hamster *was* behind? Enough said....

I hope you find the hamster soon, but be careful how you look!

Peace,
Nancy

Praying that you will find him!

The same thing happened to me as a child and I found him climbing the living room draperies .

Praying, too, Irene. I'm not too fond of little rodents running around loose in my house. As a teenager I babysat for this family that had one escape. It was SOOO unnerving to be sitting and watching TV in the dark and see this critter running across the room. I'm a bit squeamish about them. I just applaud you for having them in the house in the first place!

I'm afraid I don't have an update -- Dusty is still missing in action. With all your prayers, I am hopeful he'll show up.

What complicates our search is that the hamster cages are in our finished basement, due to the smell and noise of nighttime exercise. There are just SO many places a small animal could hide down there. We have a rec room, an office, a small under-the-stairs closet, and a large walk-in closet filled with toys and winter coats. It would take hours to pull everything out of that toy closet and look in every possible spot.

No one is sure if the door to the unfinished storage area was open that night, so the hamster might be in a very large area with all the normal things that a family would need to store -- boxes, bins, Christmas stuff, etc. Now that area would take literally all day (or more) to seriously search. And that doesn't take into account the fact that a small animal could easily get between the walls of the basement rooms from that area!

Searching is a bit overwhelming and I don't have the ability to do it at this stage in my pregnancy. Dh and the girls keep doing periodic searches. We put out sticky traps with hamster food and peanut butter on them last night, but no luck. I liked the clever suggestion for trapping it that Mary linked to, but dh wanted to try the sticky traps.

Anyway, all this to say that we really need for the hamster to just show up during one of our searches, because it would be impossible to get to every area in which he might hide. I'll keep you posted.

My husband is a genius!

Some of the girls came running up from the basement this morning to tell me that Daddy must have found Dusty because he was back in his cage. It turns out that unbenownst to us, Joe decided to leave Dusty's cage on the floor overnight with the cage door open. Sure enough . . . he found his way back and is happily home again. He looks fine, but is drinking up a storm.

What a simple, yet brilliant idea! I feel so much less stressed now.

Thanks so much for all the prayers. And thanks to St. Anthony and St. Francis too.
