I could use some prayers for a complication of this pregnancy. I've been feeling awful for the past month or so. I've been completely exhausted--only enough energy to deal with swim team practices in the morning and an hour or two of fun time at the pool for the little ones after that. After that, I'm basically done for the day. I've been needing a 2 hour or more nap each afternoon just to get through the rest of the day. The idea of making dinner has been comparable to the idea of scaling Mount Everest on many days. (Thank goodness for older children and a very generous husband who comes home from work and takes over. )
Then I started feeling stressed and sad and found myself blowing up in anger at the least provocation. I honestly felt like I was beginning to lose my mind.
Well, it finally dawned on me that my thryoid might be going hyperactive, like it did with the pregnancy of my now 3yo dd. In this situation, all systems of the body go into overdrive. My doctor agreed that it looked like that was what we were dealing with at my OB appt. last Friday. When the doctor checked my heart rate, it was racing, even after I had been resting on the medical table for 15 minutes or so during the exam. (No wonder I am completely exhausted after a trip up the stairs in my house! I can hear my heart racing when I'm trying to fall asleep in bed late at night. What must it be doing during my normal activities?) I had blood tests taken, and I understand that partial results are in. I am assuming that there's a problem because I got a message that those results have been faxed to an endocrinologist and I'm supposed to get an appointment as soon as possible. That's not as easy as it seems when dealing with a specialist.
This long introduction is all to ask for your prayers that I can get an appt. with the specialist a.s.a.p., that my thyroid can be regulated quickly so I can return to some normalcy, and that I can handle all these physical problems in the meantime.
Oh, and one more request . . . my 3yo was born at a really abnormally low weight (4lb 9oz). They weren't quite sure what to attribute this to, but assumed it was related to my thyroid problems. This time I'll be having a few more ultrasounds to check the baby's size, and the doctor had a few suggestions to be sure I am getting enough nutrients for both of us. Please pray that my baby is born healthy and at a good size and that there are no bad effects from my thyroid condition.
Thanks for reading all the way through this-- and thanks for your prayers!

Praying to St. Gerard for you, Irene. Pregnancies can be such a challenge, and added to the medical worries, it can seem overwhelming. Know you have lots of prayers coming your way!

Boy your prayers are not only powerful, they must be retroactive! I got the endocrinologist appt. for Monday, only to have a different doctor call me earlier today from my OB office to say that all the blood test results are in and that my thyroid is functioning normally. Now I'm really confused.
The other doctor I saw said I had all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and should get an appt. with the specialist immediately. Then the OB office faxed partial results (which I'm now told were normal!) to the specialist to allow me to get the appt. The specialist received the results and allowed me to make an appt at their first available time. (Did they not even look at those results that were faxed?)
And after all this I find that I don't need the specialist appt. and that I am simply experiencing physical discomforts that are still in the normal range for pregnancy. The doctor thinks the racing heart is mostly from anxiety. Did you know that a resting heart rate of up to 120 beats per minute is still considered normal during pregnancy?! I guess the exhaustion could be from stress and being an "older" expectant mom this time. (That's a nice way of saying that I'm pregnant and over 40. ) But I still think it's weird that it would kick in now during my 2nd trimester.
A friend suggested that it could be blood sugar related. I'll be having the glucose test at my next OB appt. in two weeks, so we'll see.
Thanks for your prayers and the messages of concern. I really appreciate it!

Well, Time means nothing to God!
So glad to hear of your good test results. I'll keep praying for a comfy finish to your pregnancy.

Irene,
I remember having a long list of complaints when I was pregnant with Kate, and looking to my dr. for sympathy and relief, only to have him nod his head, smile, and tell me all of it was "normal." Aaarrgghh. That was not what I wanted to hear.
"Normal" doesn't necessarily equal "comfortable" ... I'll keep praying that things settle down, and that if it's anxiety, you're able to surrender it, and that if it's related to blood sugar, they'll be able to isolate and deal with that.
Hang in there! Prayers continuing ....
