Friends, please pray for my nephew, Isaac, who is only 8 years old and is in critical condition in ICU with meningitis. He's on a ventilator and having seizures. He's the youngest child of my dh's youngest brother. The doctors say the next 36 hours or so are critical. The spinal fluid culture results aren't back yet, so we don't know if it is bacterial or viral.
Please pray for Isaac's total healing, and also for Joe and Cathy, his dear parents. They are the sweetest couple, faithful Catholics (my dd Jane's godparents) and are totally in shock right now. This all happened so very quickly.
Another one of dh's younger sisters is also at the hospital and she's going to give out information so that Joe and Cathy don't have to be bothered with phone calls. Their other children are staying with a college-age cousin. I'll post updates when I hear them.
Thank you so much for praying.

Thanks for praying, and please don't stop! I just spoke with my sister in law, Alice, who lives near the hospital where Isaac is. She says his temp is down to about 99 and his heart rate, which had been up near 200, is closer to normal. His blood chemistry is better too. Alice said that the room was a beehive of activity with all kinds of specialists there all afternoon. He has a PICC line and is on the ventilator. He's sedated but still having what sounds like occasional tonic-clonic seizures. His intracranial pressure is still worrisome. The doctors say the next two days are crucial.
Cathy and Joe, his parents, are doing a lot better, but you can imagine how scary this is for them. The other children are staying at Alice's house, but are really feeling the stress.
Thank you for holding this family in prayer. Alice said she wouldn't call tomorrow unless there was a significant change, but she'll call on Sunday. I'll keep everybody posted.
All of us are so grateful for your prayers. It is such a privilege to be part of the Body of Christ.

Will pray! We had a friend's friend - a mother to three children 8-12years - die from this, so we know how serious it can be!

Mary Alice,
I'll be praying for Isaac all day long, as often as I remember, Hail Mary's and Memorare's for him.

Thank you all so much for the prayers. All the family are so appreciative! While we were out, my sil called and left a message that the spinal fluid cultures showed bacterial meningitis, so that is good in that it should respond to the triple IV antibiotics! She said his vital signs were "stable", no seizures today, and that he will remain heavily sedated for another few days. I wish I could have talked directly to her (and her phone was off when I tried) but that does sound a bit encouraging. Please keep praying. Kelly, it is interesting that you mention the Memorare, as that is the prayer that just keeps coming to my mind, even in the middle of the night.
The readings at Mass today were comforting to us all! Isn't God good?

I just spoke to my sister in law. Alice says that Isaac's heart rate,
breathing and temperature are much more normal. The not-so-great part is
that the intracranial pressure is still a problem so the doctor put a
shunt in to drain the fluid from his skull. He is not having seizures
any more. Alice says that the doctors say it is encouraging that he is
still with us, as their original concern was that he had a 50/50 chance
of making it through the first 48 hours. When I commented that we could
expect Isaac to be sedated for at least another week, she said that they
were told by the neurologist that it would be possibly several weeks. If
he recovers, his convalescence will probably take a long time. He is by
no means out of the woods yet. So please don't forget to pray.
His parents, brother and sister, and all the extended family are so
grateful for all the prayers being offered for Isaac. Thank you so much
for continuing to pray.
I'll keep updating you as I hear new information.
Mary Alice
