Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd Sara just sent this update. Please storm heaven for Clark.

We went in to see Dr. Wallen, the surgeon, earlier today, and he confessed that he is a bit puzzled by Clark's lymph nodes: his cancer was on the right side, but the enlarged lymph nodes in Clark's abdomen are on the left - that, as Dr. Wallen says, is very odd; classically, if there is cancer anywhere else in the body, it first goes to the lymph nodes on the same side as the cancer - then it can spread to basically anywhere. But always, first on the lymph nodes in a specific section on the same side as the cancer. The lymph nodes on the right in Clark look normal. Dr. Wallen said that it is possible that the ones on the left could be simply old inflammation from a virus or something - except, if that's so, it's odd that they responded to chemo - they shrank about half during chemotherapy, which generally means that they are cancerous. He gave Clark's left side an examination, but it looks and feels quite normal, and his tumour markers are still down. Dr.
Wallen is puzzled, but feels that probably the best thing to do is have surgery done and pull them all out - unfortunately, since he'll have to be operating on both sides of the large arteries, it's going to have to be a rather major operation; he can't do it laproscopically (or, at least, he could, but it would mean an operation of 8-10 hours, instead of around 4), so he'll have to pretty much slice Clark open the old-fashioned way ("like a chicken", moaned Clark. Dr. Wallen said "er
- that's a bit indelicate - it's not a kitchen!" but he was laughing), and Clark would have to stay in the hospital for about a week afterwards. Also, since he'd be cutting away at both sides, there would be bad nerve damage, which would mean probable infertility (if you're removing the lymph nodes from one side only, the nerves on the other side still function).
Dr. Wallen was at first thinking of waiting a little while to see what happens, but as we talked he was thinking more and more that surgery was really inevitable. However, at least some waiting will have to be done, as he has no room on his schedule until August. (He's also going to call some people across the country to ask if they've run into anyone like Clark and what happened.) So blood samples and a chest x-ray were taken today, and will be taken again in mid-July, and if things are looking really good - if the tumour markers stay normal and the lymph nodes actually shrink some more - than Dr. Wallen might think of waiting and watching a while more. If not (and he seemed to think probably not), then there'll be surgery in August. And not very pleasant surgery - as Dr. Wallen admits, this is a "high-rent district"
for the body - lots of major things in that area; intestines, arteries, etc. Plus, he'll have to make quite an incision. So altogether, not fun. If you could pray REALLY hard that Clark's tumour markers stay down and his lymph nodes GO DOWN by July, that would be good.

Louise,

Since my dh will be a 30 year survivor of Hodgkins lymphoma this August, I will pray for Clark in a special way.

Would anyone like to join me in a novena for Clark?

Would this one be okay with everyone?

Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes

O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of Mercy, Health of the Sick, Refuge of Sinners, Comfort to the Afflicted,
you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings. Deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors; and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.

I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the granting of my requests.

Through gratitude for favors, I will endeavor to imitate your virtues that I may one day share your glory.

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. Amen.

(Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

That's great Maria. Just remember to bump the thread up every morning (or in the evening the night before) in order to remind people. If you read Sara's note carefully there is plenty of hope there! Let's pray!

Thank you so much for the novena. I KNOW by experience that there is much power in the prayers of this group of ladies.
Thanks again from the bottom of my heart.

Sara (who's birthday is today) sent this update:
Clark has heard from Dr. Wallen's office that his next CT scan and blood tests will be taken on July 13th, and that the surgery is actually penciled in for July 17th, instead of sometime in August, though the nurse said that if the results are good, the surgery can be cancelled or postponed... however, that's the tentative date for the surgery.

Thanks again for your prayers.
